`Spiritualism, materialism fuse in Balamaniyamma's poems'

KOCHI, OCT. 20 . The poems of the late Balamaniyamma present a surprising synthesis of spirituality and materialism, the literary critic M. Leelavathy has said.

Speaking at a function organised by the Ernakulam Public Library to commemorate Balamaniyamma at the Public Library Hall on Wednesday, Dr. Leelavathy said that this revelation was in sharp contrast to the general presumption about Balamaniyamma being a poet of unworldly philosophical vision alone.

Citing samples from the oeuvre of Balamaniyamma, including the poem ``Oru Premakatha,'' Dr. Leelavathy contended that the late poet dealt with unorthodox aspects of human relationships and love. This could be connected with the vision of her uncle and writer Nalappat Narayana Menon, who had written a treatise on sex with the same solemnity with which he authored highly philosophical works, Dr. Leelavathy said. This was, in fact, one fundamental aspect of the Indian philosophy in which spiritualism and materialism were often found intertwined.

The Ernakulam Public Library president, A.D. Krishnan Asan, presided.
