Big Brothers / Big Sisters of
St. Thomas-Elgin is recognized as being one of the most positive youth
serving organizations in TRADITIONAL MATCH: A volunteer who is at least 18 years of age is willing to commit to a few hours a week for at least one year with a child, doing things that they both enjoy doing. The children in our program, ages 7 to 14, need to feel valued and important. Having a special friend who listens and spends quality time will give them a sense of value and worth. COUPLES MATCH: A couple who has been in a positive relationship for at least two years can apply to our program and be matched with a boy or a girl. The couple would spend a few hours a week with their "little" and they would also be asked to commit to at least one year. It would be expected that the majority of outings would be spent as a couple, with some allowances to have one to one with the child. FAMILY MATCH: Families can now apply to our agency and be matched with a boy or a girl with the intent of including a child in need with their family outings. The family would be screened sililarly to our Couples Matches but we would include all children who would be involved with the match. Family matching is an opportunity to provide our children with positive exposure to a caring family. BIG BUNCH: The Big Bunch Program involvs two adult volunteers who commit to an activity once a month for a period of 6 months. They are matched with a group of 3 or 4 boys or girls from the waiting list who are from the same age group and have similar interests. As a group they plan activities like mini golf, movie trips or tobogganing. The agency will financially assist in the expenses for these activities. WAITING LIST PROGRAMS: Little brothers realistically are faced with a 2 year or more wait for a match. It the waiting time boys and girls are encouraged to participate in a variety of agency activities. These programs allow our volunteers less time commitment and an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the agency. |
