MENC’s Monthly Television Program Will Raise
Awareness of the Importance of Music Education. Help Bring TEMPO to Your Community!

NOTE: As of 2003, new episodes of TEMPO are no longer being produced. The stations listed on this page may still air episodes occasionally.

  • General Information
MENC: The National Association for Music Education produces for community and cable access stations across the country a quarterly television program called “TEMPO”. The program, targeted at parents of school age children, features timely and interesting discussions about kids and music. MENC executive director John Malhmann serves as host.

TEMPO has been created to further MENC’s mission of advancing music education by encouraging the study and making of music by all. The information presented in each TEMPO program will encourage communities to support their local music programs by raising awareness of the benefits of music education and the problems local programs face. MENC members are asked to help get TEMPO aired in their communities. If you want your community to be able to see this fine program, we need your help and support!

  • TEMPO Episode Information
Episode 1: The role of music in early childhood development; why alternative ensembles are gaining popularity in schools.
Episode 2: How technology is changing the way kids learn music at school and at home
Episode 3: What does the correlation between music and brain power mean in the real world?
Episode 4: Music for life (or, why one day your kids will thank you for encouraging them to know the difference between sharps and flats)
Episode 5: The debate about downloading music over the Internet — and what impact this may have on young people’s sense of intellectual property rights and fairness.
Episode 6: A conversation with Maestro Leonard Slatkin, music director of the National Symphony Orchestra, about the value in taking young people to hear live music.
Episode 7: Everything You've Always Wanted To Know About Buying Musical Instruments In Your Local Music Store...But Were Afraid To Ask. A primer on being a smart consumer in what is to many parents very unfamiliar territory.
Episode 8: The realistic career prospects for music majors upon graduation from college. Just how difficult is it for a person with a degree in music (and extensive expertise in one or more instruments) to break into the business? Straight talk about a very competitive industry.
Episode 9: Student musicians demonstrate the instruments in a school orchestra and discuss what it is like to play each one.
Episode 10: The instruments in a typical school band are featured. Episodes 9 and 10 offer a fresh and encouraging primer for anyone thinking about joining their school orchestra or band.
Episode 11: A school psychologist discusses the profiles of kids who get involved in school music in comparison to those involved with other school activities.
Episode 12: A preview of the "How Cool Is Your School" contest with a discussion of the rules and why parents should encourage their kids to get involved.

Dear (name of general manager or station),

On behalf of my fellow school music teachers in our community, I would like to ask that you please consider broadcasting the excellent quarterly program called TEMPO. Produced by MENC: The National Association for Music Education and Fairfax County (VA) Public Access Television, TEMPO explores the fascinating topic of learning music — something that is of interest to parents of school age children, and adults of all ages. The production values are first rate, and MENC has committed to a full year’s worth of programs.

If you indeed schedule TEMPO on a regular basis, music teachers in our area will make certain that their students’ parents are reminded to tune in!
You can receive the show for free on S-VHS. For more information, please contact the show’s producer, John Meyers, at
    tempo@menc.org. Thank you!
