RPP dissidents open contact office The breakaway faction of the ruling Rashtriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) established its contact office in Kathmandu on Sunday as part of preparation for a “broad political conference”. Inaugurating the contact office at Baluwatar, former Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa who leads the faction, said the emergence of a “new broad political alliance” is to address the political crisis facing the country. The alliance, according to him, will move forward with a new political ideology where leaders and cadres of other political parties as well as independent people could join in. Accusing that the RPP leadership under Pashupati Shumsher Rana failed to maintain internal democracy, Thapa - along with some senior leaders -had parted ways with the RPP two weeks ago. He informed that preparation for the “broad political conference “ would begin very soon. During a press briefing after the inauguration of the contact office, Thapa expressed the confidence that the new political alliance would emerge as a powerful political entity. He also made it a point to blame the Deuba government of lacking in political will to solve the Maoist problem. “The government’s claim to hold elections by the end of this year (2061 B.S) is nothing more than a pressure tactic. But this is not going to work,” he said, adding, “It is about time that we considered addressing the economic and social agendas of the Maoist insurgents.” Kamal Thapa, another leader of the faction, claimed that the focus of the new political party would be in establishing new political ideology rather than engaging in power game. Thapa group’s “broad political conference” is likely in Poush, it is learnt. nepalnews.com mbk Nov 21 04
