Featuring the first retractable roof in the UK, the UEFA 5-star rated Millennium Stadium opened its doors in 1999, and has attracted over 1.3 million visitors a year since.
Plans for the new stadium began in earnest when Wales won the right to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup Final, and the facilities and capacity of the National Stadium in Cardiff Arms Park were deemed insufficient.
Having raised the necessary £114 million, building work began in 1997, and 2 years and fifty-six thousand tonnes of concrete and steel later, a fine arena featuring 6 restaurants, 15 bars, and 128 hospitality boxes, had arisen alongside the old stadium in Cardiff Arms Park.
The Millennium Stadium has already hosted numerous prestigious fixtures in the footballing calendar, including The FA Cup Final, The Carling Cup Final, The FA Community Shield as well as Welsh internationals. It has also hosted the Rugby World Cup Final, Speedway and many major concerts.
England will play at The Millennium Stadium for the first time in their World Cup Group 6 Qualifier with Wales on Saturday 3 September 2005.
