Player Profile

Was involved in a dramatic end to the 2004 season where he took the 116th and final automatic place on the Volvo Order of Merit by a mere 13.57 (9.39) over the 117th placed Jarrod Moseley. Made a valiant, although ultimately unsuccessful attempt to qualify for The European Ryder Cup Team at Brookline in 1999. Shot a closing 65 in the final counting tournament, the BMW International Open, but finished 11th in the qualifying table and so missed out on an automatic place. His disappointment was soothed somewhat two months later when he won the Belgacom Open in tremendous style at Royal Zoute. One of the tallest players on Tour at 6ft 5in and possesses one of the best swings. Son of a greenkeeper, hails from St Malm in Sweden but is now resident in Monaco. Follows the teachings of the off-beat psychologist, the late Dr Bengt Stern, who died on the Friday of his last European Tour win, the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre in 2002, and to whom Karlsson dedicated the victory. Past tasks undertaken under the guidance of Stern included a two week fast and an entire night spent on his feet hitting ten foot putts while a friend berated him if he missed, the idea being that he would face a level of frustration that would go way beyond anything which could unsettle him in a tournament context.
