This site was last updated on the 10th April 2005 The New Trafalgar Dispatch
The Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 was one of the most important events in British history and has been an inspiration to the Royal Navy right up to the present day.
In celebration of the 200th anniversary of this famous battle and of Admiral Lord Nelson's death, there are many events being organised for the summer of 2005. One of these is the New Trafalgar Dispatch.
The New Trafalgar Dispatch is a recreation of the delivery of Vice Admiral Collingwood’s original dispatch (report) to the Admiralty following the Battle of Trafalgar. The original dispatch was carried by HM Schooner Pickle from the fleet off Cape Trafalgar to Falmouth - see the map below. From Falmouth the Lieutenant commanding HMS Pickle travelled by post chaise to London
The recreation comprises a voyage in the summer of 2005 by the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s ship, the Lord Nelson, from Cape Trafalgar to Falmouth following HMS Pickle's track. A specially built replica post chaise will then travel on parts of the route of the original 1805 journey from Falmouth to London, now known as the Trafalgar Way, arriving at the Admiralty in London in September 2005. Events will be organised in the towns, villages and other places along the Trafalgar Way.
The New Trafalgar Dispatch is one of many events being run in the summer of 2005 under the aegis of the Official Nelson Commemorations Committee to commemorate the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
