MediaCorp wins 7 awards at Asian Television Awards 2003

- MediaCorp TV Channel 5 is Channel Of The Year

SINGAPORE - 5 DECEMBER 2003 - MediaCorp bagged the lion’s share of awards at the Asian Television Awards last night (see annex for details). MediaCorp TV Channel 5 alone won 5 awards, including the coveted Channel of the Year title, which it last won in 2001.

Channel 5 swept the comedy categories. Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd won in the Best Comedy Programme for the sixth consecutive year since 1998, while Gurmit Singh, who plays the eponymous lead character, picked up his fifth win for Best Comedy Performance By An Actor. Hong Kong star Lydia Sum, who stars in Living With Lydia, took home the award for Best Comedy Performance By An Actress.

MediaCorp artiste Vernetta Lopez proved she could do serious roles as well as she handles comedy characters, netting the award for Best Drama Performance By An Actress (Ceciliation). She won Best Comedy Performance By An Actress in 2000 for Under One Roof, a sitcom.

The various winning entries contributed to Channel 5 being crowned Channel Of The Year. Ms Selena Ho, Vice President, Network Programming & Promotions 5, MediaCorp TV, said, "Winning Channel Of The Year for the second time in three years is a tremendous honour for Channel 5. It shows that we are recognised as a channel of quality and distinction by our peers in the region."

MediaCorp TV12's The Singapore Short Story Project, produced by Film Formations, had double honours – it won for Best Drama Series as well a technical award, the KODAK VISION Award Best Cinematography - Long Form. The Singapore Short Story Project is a dramatic series of one-hour episodes that interweaves six different storylines, with each plot adapted from a short story by a Singapore writer.

Mr Woon Tai Ho, CEO of MediaCorp TV12, said, "These awards endorse MediaCorp TV12 Arts Central's commitment to innovative and experimental programme-making. The series is not just successful in its innovation, it is also successful in its ability to be relevant to both the local and international audience."

Mr Lee Thean-jeen Director of Production, Film Formations Pte Ltd, said, "This is the second drama series we've produced with Arts Central to receive recognition at the Asian Television Awards, the first being AlterAsians. We're deeply honoured at being recognised in not just one, but two categories - Cinematography and Best Drama Series - and hope that this successful collaboration will continue to produce more drama series that will provide viewers with an alternative to more mainstream fare on other channels."

MediaCorp TV Channel 5 will telecast The Asian Television Awards on Friday 12 December 2003 from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. MediaCorp TV12 Arts Central will air a repeat of The Singapore Short Story Project on Sunday, 7 December 200, at 10pm.
