Paris gang rape trial begins

A trial involving 20 adolescents accused of gang raping a 15-year-old schoolgirl has opened in France.

In a case which has close parallels with a series of gang rape trials in Sydney this year, the unnamed victim is said to have been threatened with death if she told her story to police.

Among the 20 accused are two girls who are alleged to have procured the victim by luring her to a suburb in Paris where she was then attacked.

The 18 male accused are said to have shared the girl around for a series of forced sex acts carried out in public toilets or the basements of blocks of flats.

Sociologists say such gang rapes are relatively common among gangs of immigrant teenagers from rundown suburbs around Paris.
