Fights to Save New London Submarine
Base
The Department of Defense Base
Realignment and Closure Commission
(BRAC) recently recommended closing
Connecticut's New London Submarine
base. Congressman Christopher Shays
(R-Bridgeport) is working closely
with Governor Rell, Congressman
Simmons and the entire Connecticut
Congressional Delegation to reverse
this recommendation. On Wednesday,
the BRAC Commissioners visited New
London and met with the leaders.
Shays made the case that the cleanup
costs were underestimated and the
ease to which the Kings Bay submarine
base in Georgia would be able to
absorb the operations was overestimated.
"This base is valuable to our
nation's military and Connecticut's
economy," Shays said. "We're
going to fight to convince the Commissioners
that their initial recommendation
was just plain wrong. I look forward
to continuing to work with my colleagues
on a bipartisan basis to make sure
we keep the base's 8,600 jobs right
where they are." |
AUGUST
FIELD OFFICE HOURS
Shays' staff will hold field office
hours in the following locations
in August. Office hours offer Fourth
District residents an opportunity
to speak directly with staff about
questions or concerns related to
federal government programs and
agencies. We look forward to seeing
you there!

Shays Stresses We Must Now
"Win the Peace" |
Praising
our military effort in Iraq as "an 11 on
a scale of 1 to 10," National Security Subcommittee
Chairman Christopher Shays is calling for that
same dedication and resolve in our rebuilding
efforts. |

Iraq
On a scale of 1 to 10, the performance of our troops during the war
was an "11." Our commitment to the future of the Iraqi people
must be just as significant. |
Campaign Finance Reform
Our legislation aims to end the current system in which corporate
treasury and union dues money drowns out the voice of individual Americans. |
Terrorism
Christopher is chairman of the National Security Subcommittee of the
Government Reform Committee, which covers all matters relating to
national security, including anti-terrorism efforts. |
