Election results 1868 -

saltire shield'Members have made much of the times when that has happened since the war - between 1964 and 1966, and in the brief period between the two elections in 1974, when Scottish Members effectively tipped the balance of those Labour Governments. However, there has been somewhat selective recollection of the period between 1979 and 1997, when a whole barrel-load of initiatives were taken by a Conservative Government who commanded minority - and a minority reducing at every election - support in Scotland. Measures were continually taken that were at odds with the views and the votes of a majority of Scottish Members of Parliament.'
John Swinney, Hansard, 6 th May 1998.

The Liberal Unionists split from the Liberal Party over Irish Home Rule. They entered into an alliance with the Conservatives in 1895 and fused to form the Scottish Unionist Party in 1912, although some MPs continued to stand as 'Liberal Unionists' or 'National Liberals'.
