In the early days, most parts of the Visayas islands were subjected to attacks by marauding pirates of Mindanao. However, the settlement (which later became known as Inopacan) was spared because of the legendary dragon sized snake which attacked the “pankos” (boats) of the pirate before it could even land its shores. The snake inhabited a cave in a cape located in the western side approach to the settlement. The cape cave is, up to this present day, still known as “Bay-sa-has” or home of the snake. When the snake died, the settlement continued to enjoy a life of peace and safety because there appeared another protector of the people, a legendary man by the name of Inong who was gifted with supernatural powers. He was very agile, fast and jumps very high that people believed he could fly. Because of this very extraordinary powers he was widely known as “Inong Pak-an”. The moniker means a man with wings.
