LEVALLOIS TECHNIQUE

The initial flaking is used to predetermine the final "levallois" flake removal.

The core is rounded in outline by removing flakes around the edges

then flakes are removed from the core surface towards the centre

flaking continues from the edge to the middle

flaking continues to converge towards the middle

until the entire surface of the core has been shaped and prepared

A striking platform is prepared at one end

The platform is then struck

a flake is removed to a predetermined shape with sharp edges all around

LEVALLOIS POINTS

Levallois points are made in a similar way but with the converging flake scars coming to a point on the core
