Songs of Komo, SW Burkina, 2002 This is the music of the famous Komo masks of the Senufo and Bamana in western Burkina and eastern Mali. The clear human voice is the assistant to the mask, and the synthesized, kazoo-like voice is the mask itself. Recorded at the funeral of an elder of Komo in a small Senufo village in March, 2002 by Konomba (Christopher D. Roy).
Winiama drums and flutes, Ouri, 1984 The griots (musicians) of the Naniebon neighborhood in the village of Ouri play drums and flutes to accompany masks at a village purification ceremony.
Bwa balas, flutes and drums, Boni, 1984 The large plank masks of the village of Boni perform at an initiation to the music of Bwa balas (balaphones), wooden whistles, and long membranophones.
Dougoutigi Kone, bala, Ouagadougou, 2002 This very famous musician lives and works in Ouagadougou with his large family of young musicians. He has recorded numerous times, and actively seeks work playing for members of the community.
More of Dougoutigi Kone, bala, Ouagadougou, 2002 Dougoutigi is accompanied by his sons on balas and drums.
Nuna drum music, Tisse, 1985 Drums and flutes accompany the performances of masks in this small rural village during an initiation in 1985. As the mask approaches my microphone the music grows louder, and you can hear the mask performer's heavy breathing with exertion.
Lobi bala, Gaoua, 1984 A Lobi musician in the largest Lobi town plays the bala for a small group of invited guests. He is accompanied by drums and gourds.
Mossi drums, Ouagadougou, February, 2002 A group of four bendre or traditional Mossi drummers play large, spherical membranophones for an invited audience.
Bobo (Bobo-Fing) drums and flutes, Yegereso, 1984 Recorded in April, 1984 in a small Bobo town just north east of Bobo-Dioulasso. About twenty masks appeared for a funeral of three boys from the village who had been killed by a big cotton truck while riding their bicycles on the road toward Bobo-Dioulasso.
