THE BLESCHUNOV MUNICIPAL MUSEUM of PERSONAL COLLECTIONS
Madonna Smolenskaya. Vylkovo, XIX eyelids. Tree, tempera, gilt.
Vilkovo

A town in the south of the Odessa region is located in delta of Danube and nicknamed 'the Ukrainian Venice' for its beauty. It is one of Lipovane's settlements. Lipovane are Russian old-believers who ran away from Russia in order to escape persecutions for their faith. Traditions of Old Russian icon painting were carefully kept in old-believers' environment, but they were influenced by smart and colourful national art of Ukraine and Moldova. Strict icon boards with severe saints' faces became sparkled with gold and bright colours, and luxuriant southern flowers moved there from folk embroidered towels, painted ceramics and Easter eggs. The Museum of Personal Collections is the only place in Odessa where one can see Lipovane's icons gathered in a united whole complex.
