Current Carnival
Carnival of the Cats #90 - Sunday December 11, 2005The 90th Carnival of the Cats is up and running at Quite Early One Morning, hosted by the world-famous ZoZo and Molly and ... um... others.
As for the Catmodel of the week...
If you recognize Pixel, let me know where Pixel hangs out because I never did remember who sent Pixel in.
Thanks to everyone for participating this week, and don't forget to post your catblogging site in the Frappr Map and the Catblogroll.
Carnival Schedule
The Carnival goes on tour every now and then, so it's not always on the same weblog. This keeps things fresh, new, and exciting new instead of imposing on any single blogger as a tiresome burden.12/18: Music and Cats
12/25: Watermark
01/01: Elms in the Yard
01/08: Pages Turned
01/15: Niobium
01/22: Political Fred
If you'd like to host the Carnival of the Cats, let me know and I'll add you to the schedule.
Carnival Archives
Here's where the Carnival has already been, just in case you need inspiration for when you host the Carnival on your own site.Frequently Asked Questions
- When is the Carnival?
Every Sunday at 18:00 Central Time. For people who do not know military time, that's 6:00PM Central. For people who live in New York and use Eastern Time, that's 18:00 Central Time.
- What posts are acceptable?
Anything cat-related. This includes pictures, movie clips, poems, tales, and even comments on news stories about cats. As long as you have a permalink to the post where people can get to it, it's fair game.
I would also prefer that the cat be alive at the time the photograph was taken. I don't think people want to see pictures of dead cats.
- What does RFOAC stand for?
Reasonable Facsimile Of A Cat. That's anything that isn't a cat that is shaped like, bears the image of, or bears the damage from a cat.
- Where do I send my entries?
The address is submissions (at) carnivalofthecats.com. I forward that address to the host for the week.
You can also use the amazingly handy The Carnival Submission Form created by Ferdy the Conservative Cat.
I'd also suggest that you send them to The Modulator to be a part of The Friday Ark. We wouldn't want dogblogging to pass catblogging in popularity, would we?
- How many entries can I send?
As many as you want, although it is up to the Carnival huckster for the week to determine how many they will accept or how they will order them.
- Are all entries accepted?
It is up to the weekly Carnival host to determine whether an entry is suitable for the Carnival or not. For example, a Goatse site of a man shoving a cat in his ass would not be acceptible.
- Is there an archive of Carnival of the Cats?
Previous Carnivals are available on the main Carnival page. Try not to be terribly shocked where you go when you click on that link.
- I like cats, but I hate the nasty and vile rhetoric of "This Blog Is Full Of Crap." How can I just see the cat posts on that hideous site?
Bookmark or blogroll just the Cat Crap category. It contains just cat posts, and it is a haven from the rest of the hate-filled madness for both readers and author alike.
Also, you can volunteer to host the Carnival for a week, and that will keep the Carnival off of that site for a week.
- How do I volunteer to host the Carnival?
Write me at laurence (at) isfullofcrap.com with the location of your weblog and the e-mail address you want to use for submissions, and I will add you to the calendar for a week of your choosing. Once your week is next, post a call for submissions on your weblog and it will be linked from the previous Carnival. When you eventually post your week's Carnival, be sure to link to the next week's website and the main Carnival page.
- What about my dog?
Unless you dress your dog like a cat or have your dog eating out of a cat food bowl (or litterbox), that's not really a cat-related subject. Please seek out the Carnival of the Canines or The Friday Ark at The Modulator.
- I do not have a blog or hosting space. Can I send you a picture of my cat for the Carnival?
The Carnival is for catblogging posts only. If you don't have a blog, it's easy to get one set up. If you do not have hosting space, there are free space providers out there.
If you need advice on what provider to use and what blog software to use and what computer to use, just start with Blogspot or LiveJournal or MSN Spaces or Yahoo 360. However, it would be nice if you put your catblogging post somewhere that doesn't require a login or an identity to get to.
- Why is it that I went to carnivalofthecats.com and ended up at carnival.isfullofcrap.com?
I've stripped out the Carnival domain and forwarded it to this site. That way I can manage it all within a single instance of MT instead of having to install a second instance of MT, a second database, etc.
- If I post to the Carnival, do I have to link to it?
It would be appreciated, especially by the other participants of the Carnival.
- For the love of God, why are you doing this?
It's fun. People blog. People blog about their cats. It's nice to see what others blog about, especially their cats. This fairly simple Carnival makes it convenient.
- Does this have anything to do with Kevin Drum's Friday Catblogging?
Kevin Drum does not catblog anymore.
- Isn't Friday Cat Blogging traditionally on Friday?
Yes, but every day is a good day to catblog. And even if you Friday Catblog, that gives you the rest of Friday, all of Saturday, and most of Sunday to submit links to the Carnival of the Cats. See how it works?
However, if you can't wait until Sunday to see a roundup of Friday Catblogging, The Modulator does a Friday Ark every Friday.
- Why did my catblogging appear in the Friday Ark but not in the Carnival of the Cats?
Did you submit your catblogging URL to submissions (at) carnivalofthecats.com or The Carnival Submission Form?
The Modulator will scour the Blogosphere for Friday Catblogging and other catblogging posts to collect them in the Friday Ark. That's called an active roundup in blogging terms. On the other hand, the Carnival of the Cats is a passive roundup, which depends on voluntary submissions.
- Isn't this just a shameless ploy for traffic?
Cats have no shame. Pet me. (Isn't everything a shameless ploy for traffic? If I were truly shameless, I'd put the BlogAds up there, too.)
- Why doesn't InstaPundit link the Carnival of the Cats along with all the other carnivals he links?
I have no idea, and at this point I don't really care. Feel free to ask him yourself.
Recently, he's claimed that he'll link carnivals if they're sent to him, but Carnival of the Cats hosts have reported that they've sent links to him and he's still passed on the opportunity to link the Carnival.
I fully expect people to host the Carnival for the love of cats, not for the expectation of a traffic spike. If you are doing it just for the traffic, I would you prefer you not ask to host it.
- What do you think about the New York Times article?
"Some participants take Friday catblogging very seriously."
Oh, come on. Since when have I taken anything seriously?
- What do you think about the Time Magazine Reference?
I bought the domain carnivalofthecats.com and made this site so that Time wouldn't have to print the word "crap."
- If Duncan Black of Atrios or some other political opposition were to submit an entry, would you accept it?
Absolutely. I do not hold cats responsible for their owners, no matter how much of a blithering whackjob they are. Like I should talk, right?
- Can you add my cat to the cat photos that appear randomly on this site?
Absolutely. Just send some JPEG photos that are 200x150, 320x240 or 640x480 to laurence (at) isfullofcrap.com. Any additional notes about the cat would be helpful so I can add them to the cat's gallery caption.
I think that three (3) photos per cat is a fair limit, don't you agree?
