The EOS Digital Rebel XT is Canon's latest, and in my opinion, best Digtal SLR camera for under $1,000. It certainly has the quality of a camera of over $1,000, and all the features that you'd expect to see in a higher-end camera. A very high resolution, a multitude of options, a sturdy body, support for dozens of Canon's high-end lenses, and a powerful automatice mode for true point-and-shoot capability. One thing that surprised me was that the manual is actually readable and very detailed, and is thus actually useful, unlike many manuals that accompany many products these days. My only gripe is that like most LCDs, it washes out in sunlight very easily, and it's buttons can be confusing to someone who hasn't learned the camera or read the manual. (More)

Looked at this and several others. Good design, they kept it compact, and still have 2.5" LCD and viewfinder. Some shutter lag, but what can you expect -- it's not an SLR. My brother has large hands, but was still able to work the buttons. I bought 512MB SD card to get more than 10-12 pics at a time. I love this camera! I take it everywhere. (More)

I've used a lot of digital cameras for work and hobby but I like this one best. The Digital Rebel is decent, but it's smooth plastic body is slick and feels easy to break. I used the 10D for a convention last year and fell in love with it. I was doing some side projects to save up for the 10D when the 20D came out. The 20D's new features add a lot of pluses to the mix. The 0.2 second start time, increased buffer size and various creative modes are very sweet. Most people who've used a standard SLR can start shooting right away in the 20D's "basic zone" mode full auto, while more advanced users will enjoy the level of control they gain in the "creative zone" modes of the camera. Images can be saved in a variety of image quality modes up to 3504x2336 (8.2 million) pixels in jpeg, raw and dual jpeg+raw mode. A lot of features in a tried and true magnesium alloy body. Expensive, but worth the price. (More)

I've only owned the camera for a few months but have already exhausted 4 - 512mb memory cards. The resolution is excellent, very lightweight and comfortable so there is very little shaking and blurring. The software package is also great and it is easy to use and install the photos onto your PC via USB 2.0 cable. The built-in flash is more than adequate for normal uses but if you like bouncing light from different directions you may want to buy the additional flash equipment. I was originally shopping for an 8.0 Megapixel SLR since I love to blow pictures up to poster size (and I've gotten so used to big 35 mm cameras throughout the years), there is no difference that I can see between the quality of these photos and the digital SLRs even at poster size. Canon uses a proprietary battery so if you plan on long shoots (several hours) you'll need to have at least two (2) batteries on hand. This is my first digital camera and I'm in love! The movie and sound works awesome as do all of the scenes! The pictures are so clean and the menu is really easy to use. The one tiny con I have with it is the 8 second delay between pictures, but this can probably be fixed with a better memory card maybe? This camera takes very good high res photos, works on 4AA batteries. Panoramic stitch mode is nice for panoramic shots and the software does an excellent job merging the images. At 7.1 MP it is a nice camera that is ready to shoot almost immediately after powering up. Lots of scene modes and nice resolution in video mode as well(almost as nice as my DV camcorder, a little grainier). The pros outweigh the cons and is a great deal for the money. The Display screen pivots and rotates and is quite manueverable.Also has the abilty to use other lenses such as wide angle & telephoto. The few cons I have noticed are the fact that it will not date stamp unless you're in postcard mode, which provides only a res. of 1600 X 1200 so if you like date stamps on your photos this may not be the right camera for you.( I think Canon should have thought about that a little more, its a nice feature to have, most of us want it) It does not come with a power cord either. This is the 4th digital camera I've owned and by far the best. It's compact size is great to carry with you everywhere you go yet is very stable to use. The controls are easy to operate and even in fully automatic mode the pictures are awesome. It far surpasses my Olympus digital cameras in picture quality. The video mode takes very smooth video. I've always been told that a camera manufacturer would provide a better digital camera than a technology company - so I looked primarily at Canon and Nikon. I wanted a large optical zoom (for sports photography) and along with that, image stabilization was a must. I found everything - and more - in the Canon S2-IS! I have only had this camera less than a month, but I have taken over 300 photos at the US Open in Pinehurst, then 200+ photos on a trip to Maryland. I tried to put the camera through it's paces early on - using the macro, using the zoom, the flash - everything that I could think of. The pictures come out incredibly clear! From close-ups of my daughter, to action shots of Tiger Woods - this camera captured everything accurately and with great range.
