Interests

I have published articles and books on syntax, phonology, languages of British Columbia, especially Haisla, on problems of tense and aspect in semantics, and on formal problems and semantic issues in the morphology of polysynthetic languages. Since my retirement in early 1992, I have had an active, though part-time, involvement with the department. For several years, I taught linguistics and cotaught Haisla and Coast Tsimshian in British Columbia. Currently I hold an appointment as a Professorial Research Associate at SOAS (University of London), where I have taught semantics and field methods. Going beyond strictly scientific interests, I am concerned with language rights and problems of language endangerment . I also write poetry and play banjo and various other instruments, including (beginning!) didjeridoo.

I am married to Wynn Chao, who teaches at SOAS and lives in London with twins Chris and Gabby. I now live permanently in London but try to get back to Pelham, Massachusetts, from time to time.

<!-- <H2>Publications Here's a link to a list of my publications in linguistics and another to HTML versions of some recent and not so recent papers and other documents..

I taught (Spring 2002-2003) a seminar on Morphosemantics at UMass (Amherst), Linguistics 794A, Mondays 2:30 - 5:15, Herter 112. I posted class notes on the web. Feedback is welcome.
