Population A few speakers in Venezuela, perhaps 238 in the ethnic group (1975 Gaceta Indigenista). 
Region Colombian border in extreme southwest, Amazonas, along the upper Rio Negro from Brazil-Venezuela border to the Casiquiare Canal, Maroa.
Alternate names   BARAWANA, BARAUNA, BARAUANA, IHINI, ARIHINI, MALDAVACA, CUNIPUSANA, YAVITA, MITUA
Classification Arawakan, Maipuran, Northern Maipuran, Inland.
Comments Bilingualism in Spanish, Nhengatu. All are elderly (1975). The name 'Baré' is also used as a cover term for separate languages: Baré, Mandahuaca, Guarekena, Baniwa, Piapoko. Nearly extinct.
