Population 70,000 in the ethnic group (1989). 
Region Timor Island, eastern end around Baucau and inland, west of Fataluku, from northern to southern coast in a dialect chain.

Dialects MAKLERE, MAKASAI.
Classification Trans-New Guinea, South Bird's Head-Timor-Alor-Pantar, Timor-Alor-Pantar, Makasai-Alor-Pantar, Makasai.
Comments Not closely related to other languages. Some speakers cannot function at all in Indonesian, Portuguese, or Tetum Prasa. Traditional religion, Christian.
