The Art of Tim

It’s mighty cunning

I had a really good Christmas. I enjoyed it particularly because my family didn’t focus very much on gifts. We exchanged some presents, but it wasn’t made into a big deal. It was more about hanging out. Next year I wouldn’t mind taking it even a step further and skipping presents on Christmas morning alltogether, and insteading playing a board game together or something.

I got Britanny a new winter jacket, because we’re going skiing for a week shortly. I also got her the boxed set for Sex in the City. She got me a new leather wallet from Brookstone and a handful of other things I needed.

My roommate Briana knitted me my very own Jayne Hat for Christmas. Firefly fans will know what I’m talking about.

For the holidays

I did this sketch on a 11x14 piece of bristol board for one of my roommates as a christmas gift. I thought I’d share with you. It has a few flaws, but that’s what sketches are all about.

Yesterday was fun. I took my car out for a little while, to do some quick errands. Got a lot of stares, and even a few shouted compliments. When I got home I locked and wrapped her up in the garage.

Britanny and I spent the rest of the day cooking a nice holiday dinner for us and Matt and Briana. It turned out really great, and afterwards we sat in the living room and opened presents. When we were done, we started to watch March of the Penguins, which was really good, but we started to fall asleep so we called it a night.

I’m heading up to Cape Cod today to spend the weekend with my family for the holiday.

Have a safe and happy weekend, everyone. I’ll see you next week.

I got my MX-3 back, by the way. I know there was a chunk of you that were eager to see how she turned out. This is totally going to be a car post, so if cars don’t do it for you, you could skip this and not be missing anything important.

So the MX-3 is going to be packaged up and stored for the winter shortly. She’ll never be driven in rain or snow again, but while the weather holds clear I may be able to sneak in a few joyrides.

In case you don’t remember it all started here.

Here is how she looks now:

I’m really happy to have it back. I love my Jeep, but I missed driving a standard. And I missed the way she sounds. Now that I’ve already done the engine swap, the headers and exhaust work, and the cold-air intake, my next projects will be the suspension and the brakes. She needs to be lowered about an inch, maybe an inch and a half. And I definitely need new rotors.

The interior needs to be finished as well. Since I’m removing the rear seat in favor of possibly a roll cage, I’ll need some extra carpeting done. I’ve got Sparco Torino seats in there now (forgot to take the plastic off for the pictures).

But these projects will wait until early next spring, when I take her out of storage. Once she’s all finished, I’ll start bringing her to car shows and MX-3 meets around New England, just for fun.

Zoom zoom.

It’s in the way that you use it

So today was the last day of finals for Britanny. It was a really rough semester, and I know she’s relieved that it’s over, so we went out to celebrate. As such, I put off work for a while, and I was up late finishing up today’s comic. I downed a bunch of Red Bull to help keep me awake, which I wouldn’t usually do, but we had some around since Toby and his girlfriend Dara visited last weekend, and Dara works for Red Bull.

Aaaaaanyway, I finished the comic and was still wide awake. So I decided to do another throwaway sketch for ya. A throwaway sketch for me is art for the sake of art. A quick sketch that I don’t spend more than twenty minutes on total, and whose sole purpose is to get art out of my system. Be it a certain pose, a certain character, outfit, or just trying something a lil different. It is what it is, and it will never be “complete” or polished. I sketch it, get it out of my system, and then it gets pushed to the side, or thrown out.

I’m really proud of Britanny, and I’m happy that she gets to relax for a little while over the holidays. We went out for food and drinks, and then came back home and watched a movie. The Fantastic Four. We missed it in the theaters, so we hadn’t seen it yet. I enjoyed it, actually. It had plenty of cheeseball moments, but overall I thought it was entertaining. Not the worst super hero movie by any means.

Quick sketch on the Cintiq this afternoon. Spent about an hour on it. Two levels of sketching, inked and colored directly over the sketchwork. No shadow layer, only highlights. Five or six highlight layers.

So you get to see the Xbox project I was working on before any of the losers who don’t read my journal ;)

Behold, the upcoming Ctrl+Alt+Del Xbox 360 skins from! I had considered doing faceplates, but why do boring faceplates when you can skin your whole machine in sexiness. You can click for larger versions of the hawtness.

Note: This is NOT the big CAD announcement, although I think it’s pretty damned cool.

These will be available soon. They do not ruin your Xbox or void your warranty in any way. They are vinyl adhesives that can be removed if you decide you want to put a different skin on.

I know, I know. I’ve been shitty about posting again. Hopefully you’ll understand, come the big announcement December 1st, what’s been eating up a lot of my time. I just finished one project, which you’ll see then, and I’m working on another big one that I’ll be able to show you soon. It’s for the Xbox 360.

I went up to Cape Cod for Thanksgiving, and that was fun. Britanny was in Vermont with her family, and I miss her terribly, but she’ll be home tonight, so that’s good.

Played on Xbox Live with a bunch of fans last night, and that was really fun. Perfect Dark Zero isn’t the greatest game, but multiplayer is growing on me a bit. Any game that lets you bring a sword to a gun fight earns bonus points in my book.

I haven’t forgotten about the WoW piece I’ve been working on, I just haven’t had the time recently, with work and the holidays. I promise I’ll get back to work on it soon.

Stayed up last night and did some more inking. I think the character inking is just about done. Now I get to start on the background.

I have it.

Finally. After endless waiting, and anticipation, I have it.

It’s sitting on the desk next to me. I can reach out and touch it, if I want to.

George R. R. Martin’s A Feast For Crows.

And I have absolutely no time to read it.

Never coming home

I know, I know, updates. I haven’t forgotten about it, I promise. But since this can’t be technically qualified as “work”, since it’s not Ctrl+Alt+Del related, it has to take the lowest priority on my list.

I did find some time to work on it on Halloween, and today on my day off however. I’ve started inking the other fighter.

This piece is, and will be, taking a long time. My goal is to have it finished before Christmas.

Oooooh, Spooooky!

Britanny and I decided to carve a pumpkin for Halloween. We opted to do something World of Warcraft related. I wanted Undead, she wanted a Night Elf. You can guess which way we went.

First Britanny set up all the materials, and started gutting the pumpkin. I hate that part, so I worked on the stencil while she did that.

Here is a shot of me in my office, sketching the stencil on my Cintiq.

I printed the stencil out on a piece of paper to the size I wanted, and then we taped it to the pumpkin. Next we used a sharp tool to trace the outlines on the paper. By poking little holes all along the lines on the paper, we had a perforated guidelines of our design on the pumpkin.

Carving was a bit of a pain in the ass. Totally my fault for getting too intricate with some of the shapes. We had to be really careful, because some of the areas were very thin.

This is the finished carving.

Here it is lit up with the lights off.

This is Britanny and I goofing off with the camera.

Happy Halloween everyone.

Worked a bit more on the inks today.

I got Britanny and I some tickets to the Nintendo Fusion Tour next month. Seems like it might be a good time. I started listening to Fall Out Boy after they had a song on the Burnout soundtrack, and then my sister interned at their record label over the summer. I’ve been anxious to catch them in concert.

I’ve been itching to work on something a little more substantial than character sketches, so I’ve decided to do a scene. A desktop wallpaper is the end goal.

Obviously I don’t have the time to do it all at once, so this will be my project over the next couple of weeks, hopefully finding time to work on it here and there. It will be done entirely in the computer, from start to finish, with my Cintiq.

I started with what we in the “biz” call a “thumbnail sketch”. Basically it’s just a very rough scribble to get an idea for placement and layout.

Then I went over the thumbnail again and fleshed out a little bit more detail. I’ll leave it at this for today, and approach it tomorrow with fresh eyes to see if there is anything I need to change before working on a third and final sketch version before I start inks.

Just goofin’ off when I should be working.

Edit: Heh, Brian Clevinger has reminded me that Superman doesn’t wear gloves. In my defense, the sketch started as just a doodle, and only turned into Supes about halfway through. ;)

Strength and Honor!

Started this one last night, wrapped it up this morning. Unfortunately I only really did any sort of blending on the face. With my schedule lately, I don’t have time to really invest in these things, so they have to be left as very rough sketches. It makes me a sad panda.

It’s been raining all week, which I liked at first, but am getting a little sick of today, the fourth day of gloom. It’s also getting colder.

Lost is on tonight. <3

Blizzard really butchered the 1.8 patch. They broke more things than they fixed. Bleh.

No sketch today because it’s Saturday, and I’ve been making an effort to take Saturday’s off lately.

However it occurs to me that I never showed you my new Jeep, and a lot of people were asking about it. I showed you my old one, and then my old one after the crash. Afterwards I bought a newer Grand Cherokee. It’s got a Rubicon lift, custom hood and front and rear push bars (just installed this week).

As for my MX-3, it should be finished up relatively soon. The car is assembled, it’s just all detail work now.
