In an inaugural address that pledged an administration committed to reconciliation, honesty, education, health and jobs, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf noted the costs of 15 years of war. Tens of thousands died, a majority of the population was displaced, and a generation of boys and girls became child soldiers or sex slaves. “We will make the children smile again,” she said. “We will create the social and economic opportunities that will restore our people’s dignity and worth.”

Liberians Welcome President's Pledge of a New Era for Liberia

Around the country, Liberians celebrated a peaceful transition to an elected government. In Monrovia, guests at official events, as well as people in the streets, responded enthusiastically to their new president's promises for honest, effective government that will pursue the UN Millennium Development Goals to reduce poverty.

Clinton Foundation Secures Deal on Aids Drugs

The Clinton Foundation Thursday announced new pricing agreements to lower the price of HIV tests and two key generic Aids drugs by at least 30 percent for 50 countries.
