Current Responsibility

Giuliano Zaccardelli was appointed as the 20th Commissioner of the RCMP on September 2, 2000. In this role, Commissioner Zaccardelli is responsible for all aspects of the management and ongoing operation of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and its roughly 23,000 employees.

Professional Experience

Commissioner Zaccardelli joined the Royal CanadianMounted Police in 1970, and following recruit training at “Depot” Division in Regina, Saskatchewan, was posted to Alberta where, for the next four years, he performed a number of general policing duties. He was transferred to the Toronto Commercial Crime Section in 1974, and then in 1981 to Calgary Commercial Crime Section where as a senior investigator he was responsible for, and involved with, a number of high profile white collar crime investigations.

Commissioner Zaccardelli was commissioned in 1986 and served at RCMP Headquarters in Ottawa as the Officer in Charge (OIC), Immigration and Passport Branch. Subsequently, he was promoted to Superintendent in 1989 and appointed OIC of Criminal Operations in New Brunswick; he became a Chief Superintendent in 1993 and was appointed OIC of Criminal Operations in Quebec. In 1995, he was promoted to Assistant Commissioner and appointed as the Commanding Officer of RCMP Operations in Ontario. In 1998, he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner, responsible for National Headquarters.

In August 1999, Commissioner Zaccardelli assumed the then newly-created position of Deputy Commissioner, Organized Crime and Operational Policy. This position was established to ensure a clearer focus and coordination of RCMP resources at the national and international level to better respond to the changing nature of organized crime.

Commissioner Zaccardelli is an active member of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, the International Criminal Police Organization (ICPO) Interpol, and an Honourary Vice-President of the Royal Canadian Legion. He is also the Chair of the Criminal Intelligence Service Canada (CISC) Executive Committee.

Commissioner Zaccardelli has been honoured with several high distinctions and is the recipient of the Principal Commander of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces 2002; Commander of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem; the Canada 125 Medal; the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Commemorative Medal 2002; the RCMP Long Service Medal; and the Officer of the French Legion of Honour, 2003; and the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal, 2005.

Personal Background

Born in Prezza, Italy, Commissioner Zaccardelli moved to Canada with his family at the age of 7 and lived in Montreal (primarily St. Léonard) until he joined the RCMP in 1970.

He is fluently trilingual in English, French and Italian and maintains strong ties to the Italian community. The Commissioner is a strong and energetic communicator, and an authority and speaker on integrated policing, organized crime, globalization, and related issues. He is a champion of a vision unifying an intelligence-led and integrated policing model to be practised from the local level up to the international level.

Commissioner Zaccardelli holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Business Administration) degree from Loyola College. He also completed the National Executive Institute Program at the FBI Academy in 1998 and graduated from the Senior Command Course at Bramshill Police Staff College, England, and the CPC Executive Development Course.

Commissioner Zaccardelli lives in Ottawa with his wife Bette.

In his spare time, he enjoys team sports , horseback riding and golf.
