This weight-for-age event, which is the centerpiece of the Belmont Park Fall Championship Meeting, is designed to bring together the best horses in the country and is often very important in determining Horse of the Year honors. Geldings have often fared well in the Gold Cup. Kelso won five Gold Cups en route to Horse of the Year honors from 1960 to 1964, and Creme Fraiche, the only gelding to ever win the Belmont, won two runnings (1986 and 1987). Four Triple Crown winners have captured the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Gallant Fox and Citation both tallied as three-year-olds, while Whirlaway and Affirmed won the Gold Cup during their four-year-old seasons. Eight horses have won multiple editions of the Jockey Club Gold Cup: Mad Hatter, Dark Secret, Firethorn, Nashua, Kelso, Shuvee, Slew o' Gold, Crème Fraiche, and Skip Away. Kelso is the only horse to win the Gold Cup more than twice, winning five consecutive years, 1960 through 1964. Shuvee is the only member of the distaff set to win the Gold Cup, winnin g consecutive runnings in 1970 and 1971. The JOCKEY CLUB GOLD CUP was run at Aqueduct from 1958 to 1961, 1963 to 1967, and 1969 to 1974. Run at one and a half miles in 1919, 1920, and from 1976 to 1989. Run at two miles from 1921 to 1975. In 1927, Brown Bud finished first but was disqualified. Only two horses started in 1920. |
