Robertson Barracks – The Home of the 1st Brigade

Robertson Barracks was named in memory of Lieutenant General Sir Horace Robertson on 3rd May 1995 by the Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General John Grey, AO.

It is the Army’s newest barracks - purpose-built for the 1st Brigade. The site occupies a total of 700ha (430 hectares for the Barracks with an additional 270 hectares of land for the Marksmanship Training Range) and is located 22 km from Darwin and 6 km from Palmerston.

The Barracks was originally named Waler Barracks for the 2nd Cavalry Regiment’s move from Holsworthy, NSW in 1992.

Robertson Barracks rapidly grew in size as other 1st Brigade units followed the 2nd Cavalry Regiment to the Northern Territory as part of the APIN (Army Presence in the North) Project.

It boasts superb recreation facilities including two swimming pools, two gymnasiums (with weight rooms, squash courts, indoor basketball/volleyball courts, and a climbing wall) a concessions/retail area and sports fields.

The unit working areas are designed around the needs of training, vehicle maintenance, equipment storage, and functionality.

A WTSS (weapons training simulation system) range is on the Barracks and a Marksmanship Training Range is located nearby.

The Barracks also has it own non-denominational chapel to cater for the pastoral needs of the soldiers.
