Michael Allred has this to report; Here's some news on casting for "The Fog" remake; http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=19461
Even though fellow JC fan Peter M. Bracke has sadly left dvdfile.com, Dan Ramer seems to keep the newsflow...flowing, over at the file...anyways apparently Paramount, Warner & Universal has already begun announcing HD-DVD titles for the fall[!], one of the titles: The Thing! I guess with the recently released anamorphic version they have even higher resolutions in stock ;) but I assume that's always the case when you re-master something in high definition right? Anyways, pretty cool, let's just see if HD-DVD wins over the ol' Blue-ray...let the format wars begin... courtesy of: www.dvdfile.com - - - - - Mark H posted this on the mouth_of_madness mailing list: I mentioned a few days ago that was signed up for an Anchor Bay Project. (This was posted on the Mobius Forum (http://www.mhvf.net/) by William S. Wilson on 23Dec2004): ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Over the past few months, a few details about the MASTERS OF HORROR series produced by Anchor Bay have popped up on the web. Simply put, it is a low budget (direct to DVD) series that will feature different directors doing individual entires. But recently at Fangoria.com, John Landis gave more detail about the series and who might be involved. Here are some of his quotes: "each one of us is supposed to direct a movie, so now we are doing it. They are giving us a budget of $1.5 million for each film, and with that money we can basically do anything we want, as long as it's shot in Vancouver, with the same crew. And it has to be scary, somehow!" "I'm doing the first one," Landis continues, "and John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Sam Raimi, George Romero and Hideo Nakata are all doing one. They're trying to make it much more international now. It's an interesting deal because Anchor Bay owns the DVD rights only for the United States, so we are free to do whatever we want on everything else. So we might do a feature, cutting together two or three episodes, or something for cable television. What's fun is that because it's DVD, there's no censorship at all, so MASTERS OF HORROR is going to be pretty gruesome and outrageous." With that line up of talent, I am more than excited about this. I can only hope for more directors to become attached to this (Stuart Gordon please!). It reminds me of the announcement of POE when they had four directors attached (it eventually became TWO EVIL EYES). Anyone else excited about this? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mark H
Michael Allred dropped of a link to a review and his two cents on the new Assault remake [after seeing it that is]: "Here's another one from Harry at AICN: http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=19171 "I saw it opening night last night. I won't go into great detail because frankly, I just don't think it's worth it. This remake commits a criminal sin, one that every movie should desperately avoid. It bored me. I found myself looking at my watch constantly throughout it's duration. I didnt find a single character to root for or against. There was no tension to speak of, mostly because of the change in plot - instead of the faceless/mindless horde in the original, the remake's bad guys are explained to us, there's no mystery or fear of death. The remake makes us think that if you can work out a deal, you can make it out alive whereas the original gave the characters no hope at all. While Laurence Fishburne is a fine actor, his character is no Napoleon. Yeah, we're *told* he's a cold blooded killer, unfortunately we're not given a reason to genuinely *believe* it. The setting is also poor, the original clearly pointed out just how desolate and empty the area around precinct 13 was. The remake? I was expecting a pizza delivery man to show up by mistake "Oops! Wrong address!" *blam blam!* I didn't see any chemistry between the cast, the supporting players seemed to exist only to annoy the audience. I was gravely disappointed with the remake. Obviously I loved the original and make no mistake, I am very open minded when it comes to remakes but this one failed miserably. I now fear the proposed remake of "The Fog."
One of the first reviews of the upcoming Assault remake has hit the web: "Michael Allred here....I came across a review of the "Assault on Precinct 13" remake here; http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=19101 I'm looking forward to seeing it."
Hi there kids! Just dropped in with some quick tidbits, here we go; some of you guys who picked up the resent Universal re-release of The Thing may have noticed [at least as far as the copy I own] the first ever...well "pocket" for a booklet...that is NOT included!...whathe f#&%?!!...oh well, if you're buying The Thing on DVD for the second time, just yank the old insert from the previous DVD and pop it in its place, it's that simple! [see the crappy picture above for visual aid] ;) Also check out the superb dvdbeaver.com website, they have an excellent comparison of the three different versions of The Thing available on DVD at this time: the old non anamorphic NTSC region 1, the non anamorphic PAL region 2 and the new anamorphic NTSC region 1. There's really no question which one to choose.. - - - - - Once again Wilson sent me a url for yet another photo from the upcoming Assault-remake..enjoy..and don't ask me if I think it's gonna be a good movie... ;P
Wilson droped me an email: Here's a first look at the new version http://www.blackfilm.com/20041029/features/fs_assault.shtml
Michael Allred has this to report; Here's some news about a remake of "The Fog" which Carpenter will apparently produce; http://aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=18701 - - - - - "Antonio Bay, there's some FOG rolling in again, so dress warm... Knock... Knock... Knock... Hey folks, Harry here... So John Carpenter called a while ago, and after we talked about the insane scarcity of RIO BRAVO lobby cards, my cool new Don Post 45 year old Monster Mask that arrived today as if newly ordered from Captain Company... well we got to talking about the reason he called... He's working on a cool as hell sounding project called THE MASTERS OF HORROR, that he and several Horror dignitaries are cooking up... but he couldn't go into details about it, but apparently it begins shooting soon. But... He was mainly thankful for the insane success of THE GRUDGE this weekend, as it directly led to a greenlight for a film he's producing. It's a remake of JOHN CARPENTER'S THE FOG. I immediately asked him, "Are you remaking it?" And he did one of those great looooooong Carpenterian "Weeeellllll"s that he's known for and then he said, "I made that movie a long time ago," he then went on to say that they're looking to sign on a really great director. The screenwriter is Cooper Lane who has a helluva good Western script called HELLDORADO. In addition to John Carpenter producing, he's joining back up with Debra Hill and David Foster (THE THING)!!! The project is over at Revolution, let's hope they do a great job. Personally, I LOVE the original. It scared the shit out of me as a kid and as an adult... that slow three knocks still sends shivvers up my spine! Hey... do ya think they'd cast Jamie Leigh Curtis in the Janet Leigh role this time? That'd kinda be really cool. As for Adrienne... oh man, there's no hot delicious actresses out there with that throaty sexy yummy heaving breastesesessss... Excuse me... I lost it there for a second. Ok, I'm back. With Carpenter actively on this team, I'm kinda curious to see what comes up." courtesy of: www.aint-it-cool-news.com
Michael Allred has this to report; Ok, I'm kinda interested now..... "Sci Fi's The Thing is Actually a Sequel Source: Fangoria October 13, 2004 Fangoria has learned that the the four-hour The Thing mini-series coming to the Sci Fi Channel is not a remake after all. The project will actually be sequel to John Carpenter's 1982 film! Frank Darabont is executive producing and David Johnson is working on the script. Johnson is expected to complete his adaptation by Christmas and shooting could get under way next year for an airdate on the cable channel of either December 2005 or early spring 2006. The Thing deals with an alien parasite, which can take over the mind and body of a human being." Very, very cool! =)
I don't really think I'm breaking this sad news to anyone, but I still feel I should mention it. What to say really?...he left some great films behind him, which will keep him alive for many generations to come; Superman, Deathtrap, Noises Off...to name a few. - Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation - Filmography at IMDB
Michael Allred now has this to report; "Tentative release date for the remake of "Assault On Precinct 13" is January 21st and will be distributed by Focus Features (in America anyway.....)" And now for something completely different; here's Derek: Hi there, I'm a huge Escape From New York fan and I visited your John Carpenter site. I wanted to let you know that I created my own Ad-Aware SE skin for the movie. If you would like to download it, the links are below. You will also need the Ad-Aware program to view it, which is a powerful free spyware and adware remover. Thanks, take care and if you enjoy it - spread the word! Sincerely, Derek http://adawareskins.com/viewskin.php?id=28 http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj;=dlpage&tag;=button Now I'm off to the world-premiere of our own motion-picture: OVERKILL =)
Michael Allred has this to report; "Frank Darabont (director of "The Shawshank Redemption") will produce a remake of "The Thing" which apparently will be a 4 hour mini-series for the Sci-Fi Channel." Read the whole article: www.cinescape.com
Hmmm...August 29th, 'Judgment Day' right? Better break out that T2 DVD on the double.. First some news from, well Portugal..maybe? [dude, you'l need to start signing your emails so I know who to credit ;)] Hi! more news! "Former "Dawson's Creek" star Meredith Monroe has wrapped a starring role in "Vampires III : Temple of Blood", according to the Fangoria website. An in-name only sequel to John Carpenter's "Vampires" and "Vampires : Los Muertos", the film is directed by J.S Cardone ["The Forsaken"]and was shot entirely on location in Thailand. The film - which John Carpenter isn't associated with at this point, but may lend his name to later later on so they can market it as a 'John Carpenter Presents' - promises to be much more "action-oriented" than its predecessors, with a plot that draws heavily upon Asian mysticism and is "told from the vampires’ point of view." Colin Egglesfield, Stephanie Chao, and Patrick Bauchau co-star." and here's another tidbit from the same source: There's a new book coming in October about the master: Cinema of John Carpenter (DIRECTORS CUTS) Ian Conrich, David Woods Wallflower Press Paperback - October 31, 2004 Not yet published - - - - - Lastly here's Michael Allred who passed along the final specs for the Christine DVD: Here's [snippets from] the official press release for the "Christine" SE DVD from Columbia; Available September 28 Culver City, CA (August 20, 2004) On September 28, 2004 in time for the Halloween season - Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment will release the CHRISTINE SPECIAL EDITION DVD. Yep, apparently Universal has delayed the DVD once more, this time it's only seven days though. [it's now: Oct. 26th instead of the 19th] Heads up to Michael Allred for the tip! =)
Here's a look at the front cover of the upcoming The Thing re-release DVD [courtesy of: Michael Allred]. I wonder if Universal has some kind of plastic-slip-through-thingie in mind for this release, it might just work. In other news, NECA [makers of all those Head Knockers & the cute Gizmo plush dolls] is releasing a Halloween Deluxe Boxed Set. "Coming this Halloween from NECA is "The Night He Came Home". This Deluxe Boxed Set includes the first ever Dr. Loomis figure along with Michael Myers and a detailed diorama of the Myers porch and yard. This Deluxe Boxed Set will be available in Comic Book and Specialty Stores around Halloween with a SRP of $29.99" courtesy of: www.afcworld.com It looks really nice especially the face of 'Dr. Loomis ;) Check out the site, they have some "making of" sections scattered around, here's some pics of the actual set: 1 2
Hi, just updated the JC ALMANAC there on the right [as always: all dates are subject to change], I'm gonna try and find some time this summer and update the DVD section with the past 2003 DVD releases as well..but right now it's time for me and one of my friends to take a look at our second workprint ;) DVD release dates courtesy of: Michael Allred
Hi guys, summer's here and so is my vacation. Right now my friends and I are working hard getting our small "epic-indie-zero-budget" action movie in the can. We're aiming for a september premiere here in sweden, there's a small "teaser-website" up as we speak: www.overkill-filmen.com It's all in swedish, an english site is in the pipeline as is a subtitled version of the trailer. I'l let you guys know when there's another update over there =) Anyways the release of a new Christine SE DVD seems to be drawing near, this one's been in the works for a pretty long time now [see my JAN. 11th 2003 post]. But now there's a cover, and what a cover....hmm, they could have at least used the original font this time, right?..No..oh well.. Michael Allred has this to report; "Remember when I told you about John Carpenter and Keith Gordon recording a commentary track for the "Christine" special edition DVD? Well, that DVD is indeed coming. In fact, www.davisdvd.com has the cover art for the DVD on their web site. Granted it's pretty awful looking (typical of Columbia) but it's a sign we don't have much longer to wait for the DVD!"
Josh Horowitz sent me an email the other day; Hey there, Josh here from the Wing Kong Exchange (www.wingkong.net) giving you and your visitors the head's up that I recently completed a short Flash film using South Park-modified characters in a retelling of John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China. If you or your visitors would like to see it, please visit: http://www.wingkong.net/southpark/index.htm -Josh
Wow some really good JC-DVD related news coming your way [OCT. 5th, to be exact], kick ass =) Michael Allred has this to report; "Universal will re-issue "The Thing" on DVD in Region 1 later this year. While the special features are essentially the same, the one big difference is that the DVD will sport a new *anamorphic* widescreen transfer (unlike the previous DVD which was NOT 16x9 enhanced.)" http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=11829 ASSAULT ON WEBPAGE 13 - 2004 |
