Getting to the Games

With 30,000 extra services running during the Games, public transport is your best bet for getting around in March. Plus on the day your Games ticket is valid, you can travel free on Melbourne's trains, trams and buses (Metcard services only).

The Games will be the biggest event in Victoria's history so expect a bit of competition at train platforms, bus stations and tram stops.

It'll be busy. But plan ahead, leave plenty of time and enjoy the ride.

You'll find all the information you need to map out your Commonwealth Games journey on this website. We’ve also developed some tips for regular commuters getting around the big event.

So leave the car at home and get to the Games on public transport.

Remember:

  • There will be no car parking at most Commonwealth Games venues, including the MCG.
  • For Games spectators going to ticketed events, travel across the Metcard network is free on the day.
  • Spectators travelling on the V/Line network will pay no more than $10 return from anywhere in Victoria an offer that applies to the day before, the day of and the day after your event. Bookings are essential.
  • NightRider (the late-night bus service from Melbourne's CBD) will run every night during the Games.
