savings for dc electric customers who switch to ac

Effective April 1, 2005, customers receiving direct current (DC) electric service from Con Edison pay the following amounts for DC service:
  • Large commercial customers - $15,000 annually in surcharges and $0.39 per kwhr for usage
  • Small customers - $240 annually in surcharges and $0.39 per kwhr for usage

Con Edison recently filed for an increase in DC rates with the New York Public Service Commission to be effective April 16, 2006. If the rate increases go into effect, customers will be paying the following amounts for DC service:

  • Large commercial customers - $91,000 annually in surcharges and $2.31 cents/kwhr for usage
  • Small customers - $588 annually in surcharges and $2.31 cents/kwhr for usage

DC customers can stop paying the surcharge and continue to receive reliable electric service by converting to alternating current (AC) power. Customers desiring to participate in the company's conversion incentive program are required to submit a completed application and, if they choose to use the company's contractor, must enter into an agreement before starting the conversion work.

Switching is Easy

There are several convenient ways to eliminate DC service. Customers can choose the one that is best for them. The time frame for the conversion to be completed will be affected by the method the customer chooses to eliminate DC service and upon whether the company's contractor or a contractor chosen by the customer performs the conversion work.

Customers are not required to use Con Edison to convert their system from DC to AC. The customer's contractor may be able to make the changes more quickly than if Con Edison performs the work. However, in order to qualify for a conversion incentive for work performed by the customer's contractor, Con Edison must approve the customer's work plan before work begins. In either case, the customer must complete and submit for our review and approval certain information. When the customer has decided how to proceed, the customer should contact us for the necessary forms.

Incentives Available

DC customers who switch to AC service may be eligible to receive new equipment (i.e., a new rectifier). To learn more about the conversion incentive program, refer to the contact information below.
