Thrashers Agree to Terms with
Veteran Forward Scott Mellanby

ATLANTA (July 26, 2004) --  The Atlanta Thrashers have agreed to terms with 19-year NHL veteran Scott Mellanby, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Scott is a talented veteran player who brings a wealth of experience and character to our club," said Waddell.  "Over the course of his career, he has proven himself as a player who knows what it takes to be successful on and off the ice. His dedication will contribute to making us a better team, and his leadership will set an example for our younger players."

Mellanby ranked seventh on St. Louis in points (31), shared fourth in goals (14), placed sixth in assists (17) and shared fourth with six power-play tallies last season. Mellanby, who has served as an alternate captain with the Blues the past two seasons, added one assist in four playoff games.

The 6-1, 210-pound right wing led his team to the Stanley Cup playoffs in 11 out of 19 seasons, notching 53 points (24 goals, 29 assists) and 216 penalty minutes in 132 career playoff contests. Mellanby made trips to the Stanley Cup Finals with Philadelphia in 1987 and Florida in 1996. He also helped St. Louis advance to the 2001 Western Conference Finals against Colorado with a personal-record of seven playoff goals and a career-high tying 10 points. He helped Edmonton reach the 1992 Campbell Conference Finals against Chicago, and led the Flyers to the 1989 Wales Conference Finals against Montreal.

The native of Montreal, Quebec, has registered 770 points (340 goals, 430 assists) and 2,361 penalty minutes in 1,291 NHL regular-season games with Philadelphia, Edmonton, Florida and St. Louis. Of Mellanby’s 340 career goals, 132 have come on the power play and 51 have been game-winners. He has recorded at least 40 points in a season on 11 occasions, including 50 points or more seven times. He's also tallied 20 or more goals in a season eight times, and has reached at least 20 assists on 13 occasions.

The 38-year-old forward registered 57 points (26 goals, 31 assists) and 176 penalty minutes in 80 games with the Blues in 2002-03. He was the Blues' nominee for the NHL's Masterton Trophy that season, an annual award given to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Mellanby, who served as Panthers' team captain for four consecutive seasons from 1997-2001, remains Florida's all-time leader with 157 goals, 66 power-play tallies and 354 points. He also ranks second on the team's all-time list with 229 assists, and made his lone NHL All-Star Game appearance as a Panther in 1996.

Mellanby has never played a game in the minor leagues since making the jump to the NHL with Philadelphia late in the 1985-86 season following his sophomore season at the University of Wisconsin. Mellanby, who was selected by the Flyers in the second round, 27th overall, in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, helped Canada capture the silver medal at the 1986 World Junior Championships, notching nine points (five goals, four assists) in seven games.
