Dear Mr. Lesinski,

and other executives within Paramount Pictures and its Home Entertainment Division.

STAR TREK has reached a milestone this year and on September 8th will celebrate its 40th Anniversary. It is undeniably one of the most enduring entertainment franchises in TV and Film history. Last year, its latest incarnation – ENTERPRISE was cancelled despite having a loyal following who still mourn the absence of all-new television adventures.

We recently read with interest an article in the trade paper Variety which announced the formation of a new department within Paramount devoted to original productions on a straight-to-DVD basis. From the very first Star Trek videocassettes in the late 1980s to the modern-day explosion of the DVD format, fans have always given a tremendous response to each and every Paramount Home Entertainment product. Pre-ordering and turning up to midnight store openings on the day of release to get the latest installment. Even outside America, legions of fans would rush out especially to see an all-new episode yet to appear on any local TV channel. Star Trek fans are second to none in their dedication and spending power.

A straight-to-DVD production would be both profitable for Paramount, as well as going a long way towards putting this franchise back on its feet. At this stage, it is almost certainly a better proposition than another cinema outing. DVD sales are racing head of box office receipts with more and more people simply waiting a few months to see films in the comfort of their own homes. In addition, the average consumer would have no reservations in spending their hard-earned on a special single disc release, where they might hesitate with some of the more expensive series box-sets.

Witness the recent success of the cancelled sci-fi series – Firefly. Revitalized by DVD sales, “Serenity”, its feature-film outing is again reaping rewards. This is just the latest example of an ongoing success story begun by those who believe their franchises maybe underperforming at the box office or on television but still recognize the devoted fan base, like FOX has done with The Family Guy and Universal with American Pie.

Enterprise continues to hold potential in our opinion and its premature cancellation has left too many loose ends dangling. The last episode “These Are The Voyages…” really failed to bring appropriate closure to the characters portrayed by Scott Bakula, Connor Trinneer, Jolene Blalock, Dominic Keating, Anthony Montgomery, Linda Park & John Billingsley.

We urge you and certain CBS Corporation executives to put aside any dislike you may have for the franchise and consider this a real business opportunity. As Star Trek fans, we need a more fitting conclusion to the saga of ENTERPRISE and a worthy reason to celebrate the first 40 years of STAR TREK.

Thank you for taking the time to read this petition.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
