The stocky, red-haired slugger, a three-time minor league home run champ, was touted in Pittsburgh as another Ralph Kiner. He missed all of 1968 due to a kidney obstruction. An excellent fielder, he set a ML record for first basemen with eight assists in one game (6/21/71). His best offensive year was 1970 (.287, 27 HR, 82 RBI). He nearly matched those figures in 1971, when he was a postseason wrecking crew. He hit three homers (a record) and drove in five runs (also a record) in Game Two of the LCS against the Giants, homered again in Game Three, and homered twice in the WS. He slumped in the next two years, and was only a part-time player after surgery on both knees in 1974. (JCA)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 1, 1970: Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell smashes three doubles and two homers, which ties the ML mark for extra-base hits in a game, and scores five runs while driving in 6. Teammate Bob Robertson also collects five hits as the Pirates outslug the Braves 20–10. In the 7th, Robertson and Stargell combine with Jose Pagan for three consecutive homers.

» August 9, 1970: At Three Rivers Stadium, Willie Stargell hits an 8th inning homer into the 70-foot high right field upper deck, the first player to hit one up there. The pitch is served up by Mets reliever Ron Taylor. The next two hit up there will be by Stargell, who will hit four of the first 7; Bob Robertson, Phillie Greg Luzinski, and Bobby Bonilla, in 1987, will also reach the seats. The Pirates win, 8–3. Nolan Ryan is the loser, allowing four runs in six innings, allowing three hits, walking seven and striking out 10.

» July 16, 1971: Until today, only three balls have been hit into the 70-foot high RF upper deck at Three Rivers Stadium, and Willie Stargell hit all of them (he'll hit another on May 31, 1973). Today Bob Robertson joins Stargell when he connects with a cannon shot off Padres P Steve Arlin in a Bucs victory.

» October 3, 1971: Bob Robertson crashes three home runs and a double, scoring four runs and driving home 5, to lead Pittsburgh to a 9–4 triumph.

» October 1, 1974: The Bucs take the National League East by edging the Cubs 6–5. A 2-run pinch home run by Bob Robertson is the game winner. Meanwhile, the Cardinals lose, 3–2, to the Expos, as Bob Gibson takes the loss. Reliever Dale Murray is the winner.

» October 10, 1987: Jeffrey Leonard sets a playoff record with a home run in his 4th consecutive game, sparking the Giants to a 4–2 win over the Cardinals that evens the NLCS at two games apiece. Leonard's four home runs tie the record for most home runs in one LCS shared by Bob Robertson and Steve Garvey.
