IRAN: EU PARLIAMENT ASKS PRESIDENT TO RETRACT ISRAEL REMARKS

Strasbourg, 17 Nov. (AKI) - The European parliament in Strasbourg has adopted a tough resolution condemning the statements by Iran's president that Israel should be "wiped off the face of the earth" and called on him to retract his bellicose comments in their entirety. The resolution calls on Tehran to recognise the state of Israel and its right to live in peace and safety.

European MPs also agreed that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's declarations (in a speech on 26 October) raise questions about the role of Iran in the region and its intentions.

In the resolution, the assembly warned Iran not to provide any kind of help to international terrorist groups.

In conclusion, the parliament calls on the European Commission and the Council of Ministers to continue to seek a diplomatic solution to the problems raised by Iran's nuclear capacity.
