This is the seventh of eight plates from Medicea Hospes by Caspar Barlaeus, published by Willem Jansz Blaeu. The 1638 triumphal entry of Marie de Medici into Amsterdam was a crowning moment in the history of Holland. As the French queen mother, her visit represented international recognition of the new Dutch Republic. Amsterdam's authorities ensured that the city's status as the foremost maritime trading centre of the world was given spectacular expression. This print depicts the lavish water pageant which took place in the city harbour. Simon de Vlieger was a pupil of Jan Porcellis. He went on to perfect the Dutch realist manner. His work brought him fame among his Dutch contemporaries. He taught Willem van de Velde the Younger and Jan van de Cappelle, and influenced many of the artists in the rising school of English marine painters.
