GARTH MARENGHI'S DARKPLACE
Debut Thursday 29 January 2004, Channel 4
Spoof black comedy series set in a Romford hospital which,
we are led to believe, was a cult hit in the 1980s, even though
it was too terrifying and radical to be shown (apart from a brief
run in Peru. In the UK, it was replaced by reruns of Who's The Boss?).
It is also too awful, with bad scripts, bad acting and bad dubbing.
Channel 4 airs six of the 50 episodes, accompanied by interviews
with the people involved.
Darkplace was written and directed by Garth Marenghi, writer of
best-selling horrors such as The Ooze, Afterbirth and Black Fang,
who also stars as the shows lead character, Dr Rick Dagless
MD, who is battling against the evil forces lurking at his hospital
in Romford.
Darkplace was too subversive, too dangerous, too damn scary,"
according to Marenghi and was believed to have been cursed
with six deaths and three nervous breakdowns during the production
although Marenghi blames a government conspiracy for the
misfortunes.
Made by Avalon Television.
The cast
Matthew Holness as Garth Marenghi as ex-warlock Rick
Dagless MD, a maverick doctor haunted by past demons who has
to "fight the forces of evil and deal with the day-to-day admin"
Richard Ayoade as Dean Learner as hospital boss Thornton
Reed, Dagless's tough boss, a former POW in Korea whose injuries
prevent him from working as a medic
Matt Berry as Todd Rivers as Dr Lucien Sanchez,
a hotshot surgeon who served alongside Dagless in Vietnam and is
an expert in martial arts and Eastern lore
Alice Lowe as Madeleine Wool (who vanished during
the production and is presumed dead) as Dr Liz Asher, who
has psychic powers but is emotionally unstable.
Episode guide
Once Upon A Beginning Garth Marenghi introduces his long-lost
TV project. New doctor Liz Asher gets a tip-off from a psychic cat
that theres darkness in Darkplace and, when a patient mysteriously
dies, Dr Rick Dagless MD begins his fight against The Forces of
Evil.
Hell Hath Fury Dr Rick Dagless MD and temporary clerk Clive
investigate when the hospital chef (played by The Office co-writer
Stephen Merchant) is savagely attacked by a ladle and other objects
are flying about and attacking innocent patients. He discovers the
culprit is Liz, using her psychokinetic abilities after having to
wait three hours for chicken in the canteen.
Skipper The Eye Child Something long dead a giant
eye has been reborn on B Wing, so Dr Rick Dagless MD tries
to discover whether it's a macabre sign, a terrible warning or a
sacred gift from the gods.
The Apes Of Wrath A terrible sickness is spreading from ward
to ward in the hospital, causing patients and staff to regress to
a primal state. Dr Rick Dagless MD endeavours to find out why this
is happening.
Scotch Mist A strange killer mist is surrounding Darkplace,
causing people to turn tartan and filling the air with phantom bagpipes.
Dr Rick Dagless MD tries to unravel the secret behind its sudden
appearance.
The Creeping Moss From The Shores Of Shuggoth Garth Marenghi
introduces the last episode of his hospital horror series. Dr Sanchez
has fallen in love with a patient infected with cosmic broccoli,
which is now spreading. Dr Rick Dagless MD is forced to intervene.

The Green Wing Hospital league table
Three stars
Sue White A stunning performance from
Michelle Gomez as the barking mad staff liaison officer. Superb
physical comedy typified by her attempts to kill Caroline with a
fake beard and a crossbow and impress Mac by showing off her behind
while "filing".
Dr Guillaume 'Guy' Secretain Stephen
Mangan shines as the creepy Swiss anaethestist who almost persuades
Caroline that he fancies her. He cant do a Geordie accent
to save his life, though.
Joanna Clore Pippa Haywoods sex
obsessed (arent they all in this?) HR director starts of having
an affair with Alan and then becomes obsessed with IT manager Lyndon,
who cant stand her. Looks great in a leather jacket and boots.
Funniest trait: staring at her underlings through the Venetian blind
in her office.
Dr Alan Statham Mark Heap provided
one of the funniest moments of the year when Alan tried to hang
himself after Joanna gave him the elbow by answerphone "You
will never feel my supervagina again. Is at his best when
he's ranting "slitty slutty slots!!!" or mumbling excuses
for his eccentric behaviour.
Two stars
Dr Caroline Todd The new girl and
centrepiece of the action (Tamsin Greig). Very funny when drunk
and with a hangover, but cant decide who she wants to go to
bed with.
Dr Macartney Julian Rhind-Tutts
super smooth surgeon seems to have the best of all worlds until
Sue White gets the hots for him. He spent most of this weeks
episode trying to get away from her.
Boyce Oliver Chris's junior doctor
has one main aim in life winding Alan up. He ended up winning
him in a charity slave auction for 30p. They ended in bed
together pissed.
One star
Harriet Schulenburg The mumsy bird
with the mad kids played by Olivia Colman. Provided the odd giggle
when she and Joanna both thought they were pregnant and the test
results got mixed up.
Dr Martin Dear Karl Theobalds
wimpy junior doctor is always failing with his exams and
with the girls. Loves Caroline but she doesnt care. The butt
of Secretains many jokes.
No stars
Dr Angela Hunter We can't see the point
of this character at all, other than using Sarah Alexander to play
her might have drawn in a few Coupling viewers. Waste of her time.
