Dr.
Augustus F. Caine,
Former Secretary of Education, R.L.
The
Caine family announces the joyous transition of
Dr. Augustus F. Caine, our loving husband, most
valuable father, there-for-you uncle, patriarch
and friend on Monday, December 12, 2005 at Suburban
Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. With interminable
love and admiration, we thank God for his life
and the contributions that he made to his beloved
Liberia, the United States and his family.
Dr.
Caine was a member of the St. Thomas Episcopal
Church in Liberia, where he served on the vestry.
He attended Grace Episcopal Church in Silver Spring,
Maryland.
A
true patriot, Dr. Caine lived a distinguished
life, serving his country as Secretary of Education,
Senator, Secretary General of the Mano River Union,
Chairman of NDPL, Director of the Institute of
Public Administration and Professor at the University
of Liberia. He was a member of the National Constitution
Commission who wrote the Constitution of the Republic
of Liberia.
In
the United States, he served as Chairman of the
African Studies Department at SUNY (State University
of New York), Professor at the University of Maryland,
Professor at Barber-Scotia College and Professor
at Austin Peay State University. While studying
for his PhD, he worked as a Graduate Teaching
Assistant at Michigan State University and later
as a Technical Consultant to the American Peace
Corps and the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.
He was later appointed a Professor at the Alcorn
Agricultural and Mechanical College.
He
met and married his wife, Esther Karnga while
she was a freshman at the University of Illinois
and he pursuing his Master's Degree at Northwestern
University in Evanston, Illinois.
After
graduating from Liberia College (University of
Liberia) with a Bachelor's degree in History and
Pre-Law, he had intended to become a lawyer. Fate
intervened when this brilliant man won a United
Nations International essay contest and traveled
to the United States. The New Africans stated
in their publication: "He spent twelve years
establishing a distinguished academic reputation,
both as a student and as a teacher.
Dr.
Augustus F. Caine was featured in Who's Who in
the World for his illustrious contributions to
the world and noted as the youngest person in
Africa at the time, to have been entrusted with
such a key post as Secretary of Education.
Most remarkably, "Feweh" was filled
with love for all people and made friends very
easily. When asked what his legacy would be, he
said scholarship.
