Source(s)esctoday.com, EBU, oikotimes.com NewsDeadline: 30th June 2005No Switzerland at 2005 Junior Eurovision Song Contest
Switzerland has withdrawn from the 2005 Junior Eurovision Song Contest. The country made its first appearance in the contest last year when it finished 16th out of 18 participants. As the European Broadcasting Union informed esctoday.com, national broadcasters can subscribe for participation in Hasselt until 30th June 2005. Several weeks later, the final list of countries participating in the third edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be announced.
EBU confirms that Switzerland has withdrawn from the 2005 Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Swiss Italian language broadcaster RTSI informed our colleagues of oikotimes.com that financial reasons are to blame. "The costs of the participation are too high for one region. We can only afford it if the three Swiss regions participate and split the costs. As the German speaking part of Switzerland doesn't agree on a participation, we cannot afford it."
Question have also risen about the participation of the United Kingdom in Hasselt. With a third position in 2003 and a second in 2004, the United Kingdom is one of most successful Junior Eurovision Song Contest nations so far. The European Broadcasting Union however told us that ITV has not officially informed them about a withdrawal yet. All lists of participating countries appearing on the internet thus remain unofficial and speculative. Countries can subscribe for participation in the 2005 Junior Eurovision Song Contest until 30th June. Several weeks later, the final list of countries that will be participating in Hasselt on 26th November 2005 will be revealed.

Switzerland should have been disquaified in Lillehammer 2004. The JESC is such a bore, why does it continue? Has it not dawned on the EBU that there is little interest in it?

I think most of the ESC followers are not interested in the junior edition at all !
I think the UK only does good in jESC!!!
@ Jurgen Haepers
aj international* Although I don't agree that this is as every bit important as the main Eurovision, the fact the UK has done so well should make ITV networks see that it deserves a live showing on their main channel. Unfortunately, Junior Eurovision is treated like a pile of cack in the UK, and hardly anyone sees it on ITV2, a cable channel.
As a Swiss I am quite happy my country doesn't take part any more at that circus where children are acting like adults, children aren't little monkeys !!
Allez Suisse!!!!
@ SIMS & Marc
Switzerland was ALWAYS being the voice of reason for it concern the contest I think the idea of JESC should be abandoned ... it's all about child abuse as far as I am concerned!
Good Idea Aj I don't see why ITV should be the UK broadcaster - it's not like they've done a good job of the contest - too obsessed with their own Saturday Night output. The BBC should take on the contest with coverage on the CBBC digital channel. sorry but the JESC is a total non-event and should be scrapped
Well..............it's all about money. Also make the JESC less expensive: smaller setting, cheaper staging, etc! We always say that every country should participate, but it's a bloody shame that the EBU doesn't take in account many financial matters, like the one rising in Switzerland. Not to mention the fact that Luxembourg never participates in the ESC because of pure financial reasons. I think the JESC is an inconvenience for TV broadcasters. However, perhaps is a way to ensure the survival of the ESC creating new fans. In addition, in Spain some peole get a lot of money with the Spanish victory last year, because the girl is very popular. is the JESC going to be between 4 countires only???? Ooohhh.....EBU get a life!!!! See what's wrong within the esc and fight the problem cos you're going to let such a wonderful event die. Shame shame shame React yourself
