No Switzerland at 2005 Junior Eurovision Song Contest

Switzerland has withdrawn from the 2005 Junior Eurovision Song Contest. The country made its first appearance in the contest last year when it finished 16th out of 18 participants. As the European Broadcasting Union informed esctoday.com, national broadcasters can subscribe for participation in Hasselt until 30th June 2005. Several weeks later, the final list of countries participating in the third edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be announced.
EBU confirms that Switzerland has withdrawn from the 2005 Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Swiss Italian language broadcaster RTSI informed our colleagues of oikotimes.com that financial reasons are to blame. "The costs of the participation are too high for one region. We can only afford it if the three Swiss regions participate and split the costs. As the German speaking part of Switzerland doesn't agree on a participation, we cannot afford it."

Question have also risen about the participation of the United Kingdom in Hasselt. With a third position in 2003 and a second in 2004, the United Kingdom is one of most successful Junior Eurovision Song Contest nations so far. The European Broadcasting Union however told us that ITV has not officially informed them about a withdrawal yet.

All lists of participating countries appearing on the internet thus remain unofficial and speculative. Countries can subscribe for participation in the 2005 Junior Eurovision Song Contest until 30th June. Several weeks later, the final list of countries that will be participating in Hasselt on 26th November 2005 will be revealed.

The JESC is such a bore, why does it continue? Has it not dawned on the EBU that there is little interest in it?

not only esc, OGAESSC, OGAESC statistics, but USSC (Unated states song contest) statistics. Very soon we will have Intervision statistics (festival of easterneuropean countires from 1955 till 1991)

I think most of the ESC followers are not interested in the junior edition at all !
Let children be children and have a career as an artist when they are adults.

I think more countries will "leave" the junior contest this or next year !

I see you replayed to Kimberly. I wrote what she said, and she is right and you are right. 2 nations or 4 nations or 7 nations in one country are the same thing (maybe Kimmy thought that).

If the BBC isn’t going to broadcast the 50 anniversary show they certainly aren't to take over this pile of crap. The beeb made a very wise move in not taking this, as it was a flop. ITV must of kicked themselves for doing so in 2003.

Another good move by the Swiss now let’s hope (like the requesting of part jury voting in ESC) that the Big 4 follows Switzerland's example.

Although I don't agree that this is as every bit important as the main Eurovision, the fact the UK has done so well should make ITV networks see that it deserves a live showing on their main channel. Unfortunately, Junior Eurovision is treated like a pile of cack in the UK, and hardly anyone sees it on ITV2, a cable channel.

As a Swiss I am quite happy my country doesn't take part any more at that circus where children are acting like adults, children aren't little monkeys !!

I am a huge ESC fan for more than 20 years now but the JESC is nothing for me...

p.s. Kimberley, you can't compare Switzerland with Belgium or Yugoslavia, believe it's much more subtle than that ! ;)

Allez Suisse!!!!
Does Switzerland need another Lys Assia or Celine Dion to win on ESC, no matter junior or senior edition. Switzerland had some nice songs during the ESC history for exemple 1991 or 1993, or 1997, but they heve no luck. They have the same problem as Belgium or EX YU till 1986. Each year other languague, or republic in former yugoslavia (except Macedonia, Kosovo and Vojvodina). Maybe Switzerland need to change their own national finale and then they will be jump up on scoreboadrs.

@ SIMS & Marc
I don't believe it is about child abuse at all. Letting kids live their dreams is not abuse. I don't agree with how spain treated the competition last year, their only interest was winning, not letting the kids have fun. I talk to Nika/Dino/Joakim(2U) and Cory on a regular basis, and they are so happy that they entered the contests.
@ Urška Haler
The singers I've talked to that didn't do well, they know that not everyone can win, they understand that some of it's political (in the JESC). When I interviewed Joakim&Charlot; (2U) they said "Norway is used to not getting a lot of points"

Is it not fair we give the kids a chance, after all these will be the ESC fans of the future....

Switzerland was ALWAYS being the voice of reason for it concern the contest

EuroJunior should be cancelled due to child abuse -

i am sure we will all see those kids in mental treatment in a couple of years

I think the idea of JESC should be abandoned ... it's all about child abuse as far as I am concerned!

I don't see why ITV should be the UK broadcaster - it's not like they've done a good job of the contest - too obsessed with their own Saturday Night output. The BBC should take on the contest with coverage on the CBBC digital channel. :)

sorry but the JESC is a total non-event and should be scrapped

Well..............it's all about money. Also make the JESC less expensive: smaller setting, cheaper staging, etc! We always say that every country should participate, but it's a bloody shame that the EBU doesn't take in account many financial matters, like the one rising in Switzerland. Not to mention the fact that Luxembourg never participates in the ESC because of pure financial reasons.

It's a shame: there's a price to pay for too much commercial 'success'!

I think the JESC is an inconvenience for TV broadcasters. However, perhaps is a way to ensure the survival of the ESC creating new fans. In addition, in Spain some peole get a lot of money with the Spanish victory last year, because the girl is very popular.

is the JESC going to be between 4 countires only???? Ooohhh.....EBU get a life!!!! See what's wrong within the esc and fight the problem cos you're going to let such a wonderful event die. Shame shame shame
