VICTORY...or at least the tide begins to turn ...(more)
Esso is 'Exxon' in the US (or 'ExxonMobil' to be precise).
ExxonMobil is the world's largest oil company and has used its vast wealth to not only back Bush but also to influence - in fact essentially to control- his policy on energy and climate change.
It is Exxon's money and influence that has been behind Bush rejecting the Kyoto Protocol, the only agreement that brings the world's countries together to take the action that we urgently need to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate.

In order to secure progress towards an international treaty that brings down the global total of emissions (the only thing that matters in the end) then we need to set an example by bringing down our own greenhouse gas emissions, here in the UK . Friends fo the Earth have launched their 'Big Ask' campaign with just this in mind: they are pushing for a new bill in Parliament that will require the UK government to reduce UK emissions by 3% every year : this is the UK 'national equivalent', as it were, of the kind of thing we want - and need - the whole world to do through an international treaty. To help get this bill through - and to support the FOE 'Big Ask' campaign click here .
