HISTORY

Historic Parrot JungleAustrian born Franz Scherr moved his family to the South Miami-Dade area during the land boom of the 1920s.  Scherr eventually purchased a feed and supply store in Homestead.  This is where his idea of building an attraction where birds would "fly free" began.  Scherr had a few birds in the store and he noticed that the birds were friendly and easy to train. He rented twenty acres of hammock land for $25.00 per year and started developing the tourist attraction that would become Parrot Jungle.  A winding nature trail was dug through the coral rock and hammock land, leaving the natural flora untouched. An entrance building was built on Red Road.  On December 20, 1936, about 100 curious visitors paid 25 cents admission to see and hear Scherr describe his birds, trees, and flowers.  Since 1936, Parrot Jungle attracted over a million visitors, including Sir Winston Churchill, and became a world-famous tourist attraction.  On December 17, 2002, the Village of Pinecrest completed the purchase of the Parrot Jungle site and began the transition towards developing the site as Pinecrest Gardens.  Pinecrest Gardens was dedicated by the Village Council on March 8, 2003 and officially opened to the public as the Village’s newest municipal park.
