Map Sheet Information

I received this information from Joe Kralich. One may order xerox copies of the AO grid maps for $4.80 per map, with a minimum order of $9.60. The maps are 1:50;000 scale. You would need to know the map number. I was refused the maps I requested as they were identified as classified. I believe that one will need to write a good reason why the maps are needed and maybe even get the help of a Congressman. Joe has identified the following map numbers:

Dia-Loc 6640-IV
Hoi An 6640-I
Hiep Duc 6640-III
Tam Ky 6640-II
Hau-Duc 6639-IV
Tien-Phuoc 6639-I
Tra-Bong 6739-IV
Binh-Son 6739-I
Lac-Trom-Dong 6639-III
Gil-Ang 6639-II
Son-Ha 6739-III
Quang-Ngai 6739-II

Map referenced in book, "Friendly Fire" was AMS Vietnam scale 1:50,000 scale. Tra Bong Sheet 6739 IV Series L7014

The best civilian style map of Vietnam came from a February 1967 issue of National Geographics. Perhaps the best high level map available is the easiest and quickest to obtain from "Sporty's", a catalogue supplier to aviators. Almost all of South Vietnam is on the ONC-K10map. If you are interested in areas North of Da Nang, then you may want ONC-J11 as well. The maps are scaled 1:1,000,000 and are 42" x 57" and in color. Grid coordinates are marked on the map. The advertised cost of each map is $4.50 (they only charged 3.25 each when I ordered two) plus about $4.75 shipping and handling. Phone 1-800-543-8633 to place an order.

I found it interesting that Minh Long, Duc Pho, and Tam Ky airports were marked as not useable. The runways at Chu Lai appear to be operational. LZ Baldy, Marble Mountain, and Chu Lai are marked on the map even though these were not Vietnamese names. Saigon is marked as Hoi Chi Minh City. These warnings appear on the map:

WARNING VIETNAM AND LAOS ARE DESIGNATED SPECIAL AREAS. STATE DEPARTMENT CLEARANCE REQUIRED FOR OVERFLIGHT. SEE FOREIGN CLEARANCE GUIDE.

WARNING. Aircraft infringing upon Non-Free flying territory may be fired upon without warning.

WARNING. Unlisted radio emissions from this area may constitute a navigation hazard or result in overflight unless unusual precaution is exercised.
