English
antique samplers can offer splendid house and garden scenes,
and this outstanding sampler, worked by Eliza Hemming in 1826
when she was twelve years old, is an excellent example. It
has a fresh and folky character with excellent details throughout,
but most especially to the stately Georgian house, which sits
on a richly shaded lawn. The verse is an interesting one which
is not generally found on a sampler; it is the first lines
of a poem entitle "Sin's Embrace," and written by Alexander
Pope (1688 – 1744), the noted English poet.
Two stylized
trees, many birds and a butterfly provide further interest.
A very good border surrounds the sampler on three sides and
all of the needlework is very fine.
Worked
in silk on linen, this antique sampler is in excellent condition
and has been conservation mounted into its original maple
frame with a gilt liner.
