Barto Era Ends.

Nov. 29, 2005

LAS VEGAS - Barry Barto has been reassigned from his position as the head coach of the men's soccer program at UNLV, athletics director Mike Hamrick announced on Tuesday.

"This decision was based on performance, and in the best interest of the men's soccer program that we make this change," said Hamrick. "We would like to see the program go in a new direction, as we aspire for all of our sports to challenge for conference championships and go to the NCAA Tournament. We would like to thank Barry for his contributions to UNLV athletics"

Barto's contract will be honored through the end of its term, which runs until June 2009. Barto will be reassigned within the Intercollegiate Athletic Department/Thomas & Mack Center/Sam Boyd Stadium organization until his contract expires. Assistant coach Frank D'Amelio's contract was not renewed.

Barto recently completed his 24th season at UNLV, and finishes his Rebel career with a 221-200-38 record. He also guided the program to five NCAA Tournament appearances, including two trips to the NCAA Second Round (1983, 1985).

After a 9-5-4 record in 1992, Barto's teams posted just two winning seasons since then. UNLV's record the past three seasons has been a combined 14-40-1, and 8-19-1 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. This past year the Rebels finished with a 2-16-1 mark, and was 0-9-1 in league action.

A national search will begin immediately for a new head and assistant coach.
