Lord's Day Prayer 65

Our gracious Father and God, we lift up our thanks to You in the name of Jesus, and amen. We are grateful that You have brought us safely through another week, and that we have the opportunity of worshipping you tomorrow, laying the foundation stone of another week of service and love rendered back to You. Thank You for the food, the wine, the hands that prepared it all, and we thank You for Jesus, in whose name we pray,

In Jesus Name, amen.

Lord's Day Prayer 64

Gracious God and Father, we thank You for all the mercies You have poured out over our heads. We are so grateful. Help us display that gratitude now in appropriate ways. We ask that our celebration with food and wine would anticipate in wonderful ways the Supper You invite us to in worship tomorrow, and the great Supper at the end of all things. We pray that we would eat and drink now in the light of eternity. Remember us, we pray,

In Jesus Name, amen.

Father and God, we praise You now in the name of Jesus Christ. Lord's Day Prayer 50

Our Father and gracious God, we look to You now in the great name of Jesus Christ our Lord. We know that apart from Him, we could not even approach You, still less celebrate in Your presence. We are grateful for forgiveness of sins, and we are grateful for the resultant fellowship around this table. Father, we pray for the little ones gathered here with us, that You would impress upon them what it is like to grow up in harmony with You and with Your people, and I pray that You would bless them with understanding the antithesis, even though they never will spend any time in the world allied with it. We rejoice in this Sabbath meal IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

Lord's Day Prayer 45

Our Father and holy God, we rejoice that You have given us so much to be grateful for, and we thank You in the name of Jesus Christ. This Sabbath day is our foundation stone, upon which we build the rest of the week. We look forward in faith to the week You have given to us, and we trust that as we walk in the works You have prepared beforehand for us, we will be truly faithful and grateful. We pray that You would bless the food here to our bodies, that we would enjoy it fully, and that we would understand what we are doing in faith. We pray for all in this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, and amen.

Lord's Day Prayer 44

Heavenly Father, we rest in You and in Your gracious salvation. We glory in the wonders of food and drink, and how they display Your kindness and grace. Lord's Day Prayer 43

Our gracious God, we glory in You, and in what You have given to us. We know that what we are doing here-resting in You-is actually a form of battle. We thank You for overcoming our enemies while we sit at table. We thank You for the means You have selected to advance Your kingdom. You have given wisdom to babes, and have withheld it from the scribes.

We render all our thanks

In the powerful name of Jesus Christ, and amen.

Father and gracious God, we lift up our hearts and voices to You, asking You to continue to shower Your kindness upon us. We thank You for bringing us to yet another Sabbath, and we rejoice in the opportunity we have here to rest in the grace of Your gospel. We know that this dinner is powerful in what it proclaims, and convicting in what it does not do. We are glad that we are saved by grace, apart from any works of the law. We thank You for it, and seek to build the coming week on the foundation of it. We pray to You now

In the great name of Jesus Christ, and amen.

Lord's Day Prayer 41

Father of all mercies, we thank You for the great salvation You have lavished upon us in Christ Jesus our Lord. We thank You that peace with You is not purchased by our own works, but rather by Your great grace and love. We thank You for this emblem of grace, our Sabbath meal, knowing that there is nothing here on this table, or around it, that is not a gift from You. We rejoice before You for this wonderful meal, hoping that we would be just as thankful if Your wisdom determined a time of hunger for us. We would learn St. Paul’s great lesson, how to be content whether well-fed or hungry. Father, we continue to lift up our entire family to You, and thank You for the great kindnesses You have shown us recently.

Bless our fellowship and laughter, and we pray that it would all be sanctified by Your Holy Spirit. We give thanks to You now in the great name of Jesus Christ, and amen.

Lord's Day Prayer 40

Our Father, great God of heaven, we glorify You through Jesus Christ our Priest, King and Prophet. He is our Lord, and on this day He rose from the dead, making all things new. Because He remade the heavens and the earth, because He is the Lord of the new creation, it was only fitting that You ordained a new Sabbath for this new creation. We rejoice in this Sabbath rest that You have given to us, and we pray that we would be mindful of resting and delighting in You, as we refrain from our vocational labors, a great gift from Your hand. We pray to You now in the name of Jesus Christ, and amen.

Lord's Day Prayer 39

Father in heaven, You are a gracious God, and You have poured out blessing after blessing upon our heads. You have established the lines for us in pleasant places. We have opened our mouths, and You have filled them. We have turned to You, and You have bestowed Your covenant kindness upon us. We thank and praise Your holy name, and we pray that our time of celebration and rejoicing here in this Sabbath dinner would be a time of holy and joyful preparation for worship in the morning. We lift this request up to You, in the name of Jesus Christ, and amen.

Lord's Day Prayer 38

Our Lord and God, we call upon Your name in celebration, as we recall how You bared Your right arm on behalf of our fathers. We are children of liberty because of their gifts to us, and we pray that we would be faithful to the inheritance they have left for us. This is Reformation Sunday, this is a great Passover, it is a day of deliverance. You have set us free with the gospel of Your grace, and we pray that we would not use our liberty in such a way as to indulge the flesh. We pray for genuine heart-felt love for one another, and that we would walk in love and grace, just as You have called us.

We ask You now to rejoice over us, as we rejoice in You. We pray in the strong name of Jesus, amen.

Lord's Day Prayer 37

Our Lord and God, we call upon You now, asking You to bless us as we bless and magnify Your name. You have summoned us, gathered us, called us, and as a consequence we cry out to You. You have established the seasons, You have established the pattern of the week, with one day of rest at the foundation of six days of labor. We ask You to enable us to rest as we ought in Your presence now, and as we worship You tomorrow. Prepare our hearts for this worship we pray,

IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

Lord's Day Prayer 36

Our Father and God, we bless Your holy name, and we ask You to prepare us for worship tomorrow as we do. You have called us to Yourself, and have established us here in this community so that the kingdom of God might grow and flourish. We pray that Your kingdom would come, Your will would be done, on earth as it is in heaven. We pray now for our daily bread, and we thank You for it. Bless our table fellowship now, and we offer it up to You

IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

Lord's Day Prayer 35

Gracious Father and God, Your kindness toward Your people is an everlasting river, and we thank You that we will never arrive at the end of it. We know that You call us to worship You before all things, and that You summon us to this for our good and Your glory. We praise You as the God of Sabbath, and as the Sabbath God, the God of all salvation rest. We know that all work is rested on the foundation stones of Your grace, and we know that these foundation stones can never be moved. We thank You for the fellowship of our company, for the wine, for the food, for the hands that prepared the food, and for the privilege of approaching You in worship tomorrow. Our Father and God, Your goodness to us is inexhaustible, and we thank You for it. That goodness is seen in the salvation You have purchased for us through death of Your Son, and in all the kindness You bestow upon us in our physical existence. Father of all life, we thank You for our physical life, and for our life in the Holy Spirit. We thank You not only for life, but also for that which sustains life. We thank You for the food before us, and for the grace that the food represents in so many ways. We would be grateful, we ask You to continue to instruct us in that gratitude. We ask that our gratitude would constantly be surrounded by kindness, and we look to You for it.

Lord's Day Prayer 30

Our Father in Heaven, we glorify Your name, and we do so through Jesus’ name. Father, Your kindness to us extends into all particulars, and we are very grateful for the opportunity to rest before You in this way. We rejoice in the fact that it is through the rest of Your saints that the works of Your enemies are overthrown. We overcome the world, and we do so by faith alone. We thank You that the opportunity to rest every week is our sealed testimony that we are not working to inherit the earth. We thank You for our salvation, and the salvation of the human race, and acknowledge it as a gift. We thank You

Our great and glorious God, we bow before You in gratitude. We know that such thankfulness is a gift to us from You, and so we thank You even for that. We know that thankfulness grows, and develops, just as bitterness does, and we plead with You to keep us grateful and never bitter. We thank You for family, for food, for fellowship, and for the happiness You have poured out upon us. Prepare us for worship now, and help us to remember how potent this gratitude really is. Keep it as Your gift to us, we pray, and conquer the world with it. We pray to You

Lord's Day Prayer 21

Our Father and God, we rest in Your presence now because we come in faith to the day of rest that You have appointed. We rest in Your grace, and the faith that You give to do this is additional gracegrace upon grace. In Your presence we are glad to receive what You give, and so we thank for this food. We pray that we would be nourished by it so that with the strength we receive from this food we would be equipped to come before You with the rest of the congregation tomorrow, and lift up our worship to You. Prepare our hearts, minds, and bodies for this, we pray

IN JESUS' NAME, AMEN!

Lord's Day Prayer 20

Gracious God and Father, we thank You for all the blessings that You have poured out upon us this last week, and we look forward in faith to what You will allow us to do in this coming week. We thank You that the good works which we will do were prepared by You, before all worlds, so that we might walk in them. We thank You that our lives were fashioned by You, in order for us to step into them. We also thank You that You determined to have us live our lives with this cycle of one day of rest for every six days of labor. We glorify Your name,

IN JESUS' NAME, AMEN!

Lord's Day Prayer 19

Our Father in heaven, we thank You for weekly Pentecost, the ancient Jewish festival of harvest, and our festival of the evangelistic harvest?the time when You began bringing into your barns the countless souls that have been saved since that first Pentecost Sunday. We thank You for establishing Your new covenant Church on the first day of the week, this great Lord?s Day. We thank You for all
        IN JESUS' NAME, AMEN!

Lord's Day Prayer 18

Our Father in heaven, You have given us the rest we enjoy from our physical labors, and You have given us the rest of our salvation. We ask that we would be marked as people of grace, rest, delight, and kindness. As we look forward to worship tomorrow, we ask that You would bless this food before us now, and bless the fellowship we enjoy with one another now. We are delighted to be in Your company, and we pray that we would walk with one another in the same way--that we would one just as You and Your Son are one, that His prayer may be granted in us.
Do this for us we pray,
        In Jesus' name, and amen

Lord's Day Prayer 17

Gracious Father, You are the first Sabbath keeper, and we rejoice that You set the pattern in this for us. We know that many of us in our sinfulness have twisted the day of celebration and rest into some kind of dour observance, or, at the opposite extreme, into just another day off.

Father, we pray that we would imitate You, not just in the fact that we observe a day of rest, but we pray that we would observe in the way You call us to observe it. We pray that this would be the queen of all the days, and that we would delight in it, as Your Word instructs.

Prepare us in this, we pray, IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN!

Lord's Day Prayer 16

Father of all covenant kindness, we thank You for what You have bestowed upon us. You have given us a covenant Lord, our Lord Jesus Christ, and we rest today, on this day of rest, in His obedience. We praise You that You have made it so that we can come before You in simple faith and trust, not having to rely on the broken reed of our own merit, righteousness, obedience or good deeds. We thank You for our salvation that is all of grace, and we pray that You would made the food before us as a type of this salvation. Prepare us for worship tomorrow, we pray,

IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN!

Lord's Day Prayer 15

Our Father in heaven, we hallow and reverence Your name as the Lord Jesus taught us to do. We ask that Your kingdom would continue to be manifested on the earth, as we glorify the name of Your Son in heaven. We ask for our daily bread, and thank You for what is before us now. We ask that in this coming week we would be spared temptation, and that You would deliver us from all the plots that are hatched against us. We pray that we would walk in forgiveness, both receiving and extending it. We acknowledge that You are the king over the whole earth, and we rejoice before You.

We pray to You IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

Lord's Day Prayer 14

Our Lord and God, we come before You now in the great name of Jesus Christ. Your provision for us this last week has been bountiful, and we glorify You for it. We look forward in faith and gratitude for what you will supply to us in this coming week, built on the foundation of our celebration here of the resurrection of Jesus. Keep us mindful of this always, and help us always and for everything to give thanks to You.

For those who prepared the food, we give thanks. For those who will clean up afterwards, we give thanks. For the food itself, we give thanks. We are a grateful people, Father, and we plead with You to make ever more grateful.

We pray to You now IN JESUS? NAME, AMEN.

Lord's Day Prayer 13

Our Father and gracious God, we pray to You in the name of Jesus. The food before us is pleasant, the wine is good, the fellowship is sweet, and for all of it we give thanks to You. We know that if You had not raised Jesus Christ from the dead two thousand years ago, we would still be in our sins, just as our fathers before us. As it is, in the light of Your gracious salvation, not only are we saved, but so are our children, and their children, three generations at the table here, but also the generations to come. We thank You for it all

IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

Lord's Day Prayer 12

Gracious Lord and God, we praise Your name, and rejoice that You have lifted up the name of Jesus far above every name that can be given. You have seated Him at Your right hand, where pleasures flow forever, and You have given Him universal dominion over every nation. We thank You that You have also given Him universal dominion over every aspect of life, which includes food and drink, the preparation of meals, the weekly pattern of six days of labor and one day of rest. He is the Lord of the Sabbath, the Lord of the wine, and the Lord of the dinner rolls. We glorify You through Him as we celebrate before You.

We do all this

IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

Lord's Day Prayer 11

Father and God, Lord and Master, we thank You now for yet another Lord?s Day. You have given us life and light and grace, and we rejoice before You in Your great kindness. You have given us new life, when we as a people were lost in sin, and You have restored us to Your covenant through our Savior, Jesus Christ. We thank You for His death on our behalf, and we rejoice in His resurrection, which was for our justification. We commemorate that resurrection, the basis of our right standing before You, every Lord?s Day, every weekly Easter, and we praise Your holy name.

We do this

IN JESUS? NAME, AMEN.

Lord's Day Prayer 10

Our gracious heavenly Father, we thank You for the arrival of yet another Lord’s Day. You are the God of heaven and earth, the God of earth and sea, the God of days and weeks. We honor You as the one who created the entire universe in six literal days, and we honor You as the one who rested on the seventh in order to teach us how to rest, and how to be like You. When You remade the heavens and the earth, recreating them, we thank You that You put the day of rest as the first day, and have commanded us to build upon that foundation of rest.

We glory in Your wisdom

IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

Lord's Day Prayer 9

Our Father and Lord in heaven, we assemble before You in order to rejoice, just as You have commanded us. We are glad that You have set apart this day for rejoicing, and we are grateful that You have brought us to the point where we have remembered that the joy of the Lord is our strength. Father, we would gather before You now in our households, and we would exult in that strength. We thank You for the generations represented here, and we recall Your promises to thousands of generations of those who love and fear You. And so, Father, in faith, we present those promises back to You, and worship You as our covenant-keeping God.

Receive our gratitude now, for all of this

IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

Lord's Day Prayer 8

Our gracious God and Father in heaven, we rejoice before You now. We thank You for all the children You have given us, and the grandchildren also. We gather before You as a redeemed family, and we look forward to this redemption continuing to subsequent generations. We know that You keep covenant to a thousand generations, and we rejoice that we are tasting just the beginning of this. We praise You now, on our own behalf, and on behalf of all those who will come after us, descended from us. You see us all, and You know all our names. Receive our gratitude now, for all of this
In Jesus' name, amen.

Lord's Day Prayer 7

Father in heaven, You have given great and wonderful gifts to us, and among them we count this food, this opportunity to serve one another in fellowship as we eat it, the opportunity to sing before You, and the privilege of worshipping You tomorrow as we gather together with all the saints in the communion of saints. And also among Your gifts is the privilege of Sabbath rest, which we enter into now, with gladness and great joy. We offer up our rest  to You now

IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

Lord's Day Prayer 6

God of the Sabbath, God of our fathers, we pray to You in Jesus’ name.

We have completed another week of labor, built on the foundation of Your everlasting gospel, embodied in our last Lord’s Day. We now look forward to another week, and we desire to build it upon the same foundation -- the foundation of free and sovereign grace, one that makes us rest from all human work, willing or running. We know that we do all these things, but we want always to acknowledge that the day of rest is the first day, the only day upon which we in the new covenant may securely build.

We ask You to prepare us for the task of worshipping tomorrow, and we ask that Your Holy Spirit would prepare us in every way for this task. We pray that this feast would set and orient our hearts in the right direction, so that we look forward to our time in the sanctuary of heaven tomorrow with great eagerness.

AMEN!

Lord's Day Prayer 5

Great God in heaven, heavenly Father,

We know that every day that passes by is a gift from You, and that we owe You for every gift You give within each one of those days. We thank You for the week, that cycle of days which You established that has no connection to the movements of sun, moon, or stars. We thank You for the number seven, which marks out the period of time past which we begin to forget the gospel of grace and rest, and begin to rely on our own efforts and wisdom.

We thank You for the shift in the day, from the seventh day to the first. We know that we are now called to begin the week with rest and hope, looking forward to a week of labor based on the foundation of grace. That first day has now arrived, and we glorify You for it, and in it. We pray that we would rest in such a way as to honor You and all that You have given.

We pray for this in the name of Jesus, and amen!

Lord's Day Prayer 4

God, Our Heavenly Father,

We glorify Your name over every other name we know, and we ask for Your presence and blessing as we feast before You. You are the God of all gods, and Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, is the Lord of the Sabbath, and He rules over this day for our blessing and fullness.

We thank You that this first day of the week will commemorate, to the end of the world, the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. We know that this was Your declaration that He was the Son of God, and that You had given to Him every nation and tribe under heaven. Father, we are grateful that we, called out from unbelief, can assemble before You in this way. We pray that as You have filled our hearts with food and gladness, so we would return our heartfelt thanks to You, acknowledging Your sovereignty, majesty, dominion and power over all things, world without end.

We pray for all of this in Jesus’ name, and amen!

Lord's Day Prayer 3

Lord of the Sabbath,

We praise Your name and thank You for the kindness You displayed in giving us this day in which to worship You and remember how Your Son and our Lord came back from death. We glorify Your wisdom and exult in the fact that through this resurrection power, declared from Lord’s Day to Lord’s Day, Your gospel will wonderfully conquer the world.

We praise You now, in Jesus’ name,

AMEN!

Lord's Day Prayer 2

Our Father and God,

We thank You for the arrival of yet another Lord’s Day. We are grateful for the opportunity to rejoice before You, and build another week on the foundation of this day. We remember that Your Son and our Lord rose from the dead on this day, and was seen by His disciples. We know that just as the Sabbath of the old covenant was the day of rest for that creation, so this Sabbath is that day killed and resurrected, and is the day of rest for the new creation. We thank You that we who are in Christ are that new creation, and that there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

We pray that in the coming week You would keep us mindful of our duty to tend the garden of this new Eden, reversing the curse of thistles and weeds, and to labor for the new dominion of Jesus Christ, and to live as citizens in this kingdom that You have established, world without end.

We pray for all of this in Jesus’ name, and amen!

Lord's Day Prayer 1

Father and God, we thank You for the food before us. We thank You for the hands that prepared it, and for those who will help in the service of cleaning up. You give rain to the earth, and you make our food grow from the soil. You have given the rain of the new creation, so that we might flourish before You as well. We give our gratitude back to You, and ask You to help us as we rest before You on this, yet another Lord's Day. Your kindness to us is everlasting, and we thank You for the weekly reminder of that kindness. We give thanks to You for all things, and for what You have set before us now, in the name of Jesus Christ, and amen.

Sabbath Liturgy

Introduction:

Below is a copy of the sabbath dinner liturgy we follow every Saturday evening at the Wilson home, as we commence our honoring of the Lord's Day. Our families gather, and the grandchildren are asked catechism questions usually pertaining to the sabbath unless, like Rory, they are given a question which they can answer with one word, like "light." The little ones who can't talk are asked for their agreement anyway. The underlined sections in the blessings are words that the grandchildren supply. And each week the prayer is changed, and that is what the subsequent posts will be limited to. I hope this helps some of you establish a tradition as rich for you and your family as it has been for us.

Sabbath Liturgy

Welcome to our table:

Jonathan and Sally, you are most welcome here as our guests.

A Sabbath Toast (please raise your glass of wine)

This is the day that the Lord hath made.

We will rejoice and be glad in it. Amen.

Let us pray

Our Father in heaven, we hallow and reverence Your name as the Lord Jesus taught us to do. We ask that Your kingdom would continue to be manifested on the earth, as we glorify the name of Your Son in heaven. We ask for our daily bread, and thank You for what is before us now. We ask that in this coming week we would be spared temptation, and that You would deliver us from all the plots that are hatched against us. We pray that we would walk in forgiveness, both receiving and extending it. We acknowledge that You are the king over the whole earth, and we rejoice before You.

We pray to You in Jesus' Name, amen.

A Blessing for my Wife

May her house always have seven pillars and may she always mix her wine with wisdom.

A Blessing for the Children

Happy are the people whose God is the Lord. May our sons flourish like saplings, grown up in their youth, and may our daughters be as columns, sculpted in the palace style.

Catechism questions for all grandchildren:

Do you love God? Yes!

Are you baptized? Yes!

Is Jesus in your heart? Yes!

Will you take the Lord’s Supper tomorrow? Yes!

Catechism questions:

Knox, what day is it? It is the Lord’s Day.

Jema, why is this the Lord’s Day? Because Jesus rose from the dead.

Bel, what kind of day is this? It is a sweet day.

Rory, what did God make at the very beginning? Light.

Hero, do you agree? Lucy, do you agree?

Knox, what happened in the beginning? God created the heavens and earth.

Jema, what happened in the new beginning? He recreated them.

Bel, what day is this? A new Sabbath.

Rory, what is the opposite of darkness? Light

Hero, do you agree? Lucy, do you agree?

Knox, how many days are there in a week? There are seven days in a week.

Jema, why that many? Because God took a week to create the world.

Bel, what day is the Lord’s Day? The first day.

Rory, this changed from what? The seventh.

Hero, do you agree? Lucy, do you agree?
