Thorpe Waterville

Thorpe Waterville is located on the A605, approximately 3 miles north-east of Thrapston. Thorpe Waterville and Achurch form the Parish of Thorpe Achurch.

Castle Barn, within the village, was the great hall of Thorpe Waterville Castle. It has early 14th Century origins. In 1301 Walter de Langton, the Bishop of Lichfield was given licence to ‘crenellate’ (fortify) and the Castle may well have been only a fortified manor house. The castle earthworks and barn are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. The bridge to the west of the village also dates from the 14th Century.

The end wall of a barn in the village resembles a face. This was once a banqueting hall, which was part of a fortified manor house. It was built by Walter de Langton, who was the Bishop of Lichfield and Treasurer to Edward I.
