    "Poverty Gulch"
    by Pickin' Up Speed

    Review by Carmen Burnett

Includes:Fox on the Run; I Won't Go Down by the Water; I'm on my Way Back to the Old Home; Poverty Gulch; Long Black Veil; Blue Ridge Mountain Home; Picnic at the Wayside; When the Roses Bloom in Dixieland; Banks of the Ohio; Wildflowers; She's Not a Bluegrass Virgin; The Dutchman; Gold Watch & Chain; My Little Georgia Rose

Pickin' Up Speed now has their first recorded project on CD. They are a Milwaukee bluegrass band. Many of the cuts are classic bluegrass. Poul Sanderson, playing harmonica (and bass) and Linda Somers Sandersen, on autoharp, add special feeling to the old songs.

Four of the cuts are original material. Donald O'Roark (banjo) has written and sings "I Won't Go Down to the Water." Poul's "Picnic at the Wayside" and Mike Respenda's (banjo, mandolin) "She's Not a Bluegrass Virgin" are fun! The centerpiece of the CD has to be "Poverty Gulch" written by Linda. [It] has the potential of being to Leadville, Colorado, what John Prine's "Paradise" is to Muhlenberg County.
