Requirements: An interest in learning more about Linux.

Strengths: Lots of tips and tricks for installing, configuring, and using Ubuntu Linux.

Weaknesses: Not related to Mac OS X.

Ubuntu is an African word that means Òhumanity to others.Ó The Ubuntu Linux distribution was created as a free operating system that is freely distributed. The creators of Ubuntu encourage everyone to share it with others. This book discusses several ways to install, configure, and customize Ubuntu Linux to get the most out of it.

As an IT professional in my day job, Linux is nothing new to me. I work with it often. However, I did learn a few things from this book, and (because of it) I am currently in the process of building an Ubuntu file server for my home. Chapter 10, Installing a Small Office/Home Office Server, was especially interesting to me. So interesting in factÉ that I decided to do it. This book does not dive deep into the Linux operating system, but does cover a lot of the things that make it unique.

Now, just to be clearÉ Ubuntu is not Mac OS X. It does not run on Mac OS X, it replaces Mac OS X on your computer. If you are a hard-core Apple addict, you will probably have no interest in reading this book. However, if you are curious about Linux, or want to try something new, this book is a good read. Also, if you have an old PowerPC Mac (or and old PC) sitting around collecting dust, you might want to install Ubuntu on it and put it back to work. Be sure to check out chapter1- section 8, Installing Ubuntu on a Mac.
