Andrew White
Biography

ANDREW WHITE, SAXOPHONIST, COMPOSER, PUBLISHER AND MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST IS THE MOST VOLUMINOUSLY SELF-PRODUCED ARTIST IN THE HISTORY OF JAZZ. Through his company, Andrew’s Musical Enterprises, Inc. of Washington, D.C., established in 1971, he has single-handedly self-produced over 2000 products which are currently being marketed throughout the world.

With his publications, The Works of John Coltrane – 650 transcriptions of Coltrane improvisations and his book on Coltrane’s music, Trane ‘n Me, Andrew White is considered the world’s leading authority on the music of John Coltrane and in the fields of music education and jazz education he has been nicknamed The Keeper of the Trane.

Also a very prolific composer, Andrew White has been the recipient of a grant in jazz composition awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1991 to compose A Jazz Concerto For Alto Saxophone and Youth Symphony Orchestra. Now completed, this work is available for performance with Andrew White as saxophone soloist and/or conductor.

In March of 1993 Andrew White was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in the Special Projects Category. This award assisted the funding of Andrew White’s transcription project, The Works of John Coltrane, Vols. 11 and 12 – The Connoisseur’s Series of 110 new transcriptions of John Coltrane’s improvised saxophone solos. The completion and publication of that project on September 23, 1994 plus the subsequent publication of 99 additional transcriptions in 1995 and 1999 brings the total number of Coltrane transcriptions published by Andrew White up to the above listed figure of 650.

Also, as one of the world’s most cherished saxophone soloists, Andrew White, in August of 1994, completed a seven-city tour of France. Highly enthusiastic response to his playing was received in Angoustrine, Ax-Les-Thermes, Tarbes, Moulis, La Seyne Sur Mer, Cierp and Foix. With the completion of his most recent Coltrane transcription project Mr. White plans more performances both in the United States and abroad.

Of special note on September 23, 2001, Andrew White/Andrew’s Music celebrated its 30th Anniversary in business with the release of Andrew White’s 840 page autobiography, Everybody Loves the Sugar-The Book.
