Academy Award®-Winning Filmmaker Ron Howard To Be Honored As Filmmaker Of The Year By The American Cinema Editors (Ace)

Award To Be Presented At The 56th Annual Ace Eddie Awards On February 19 At The Beverly Hilton Hotel

One of his generation’s most popular and beloved filmmakers, Ron Howard has created some of Hollywood’s most memorable films. From critically acclaimed dramas like A BEAUTIFUL MIND and APOLLO 13 to hit comedies like PARENTHOOD and SPLASH, he consistently finds new ways to engage and delight audiences around the world through his work on both the big and small screens. His work has been recognized by nearly two-dozen voting organizations including the Academy Awards®, Directors Guild of America, Producers Guild of America, Emmy Awards®, Golden Globes® and the Broadcast Film Critics, to name but a few.

Most recently Howard directed one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, CINDERELLA MAN, starring Russell Crowe, Renée Zellweger and Paul Giamatti.

In 2001, Howard’s A BEAUTIFUL MIND was nominated for 8 Academy Awards® and went on to win four of them including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Picture (a producing credit Howard shared with long-time collaborator, Brian Grazer). Howard and Grazer also received the first annual Awareness Award from the National Mental Health Awareness Campaign for their work on the film. The film further garnered four Golden Globes®, including the award for Best Motion Picture Drama and a Best Director of the Year for Howard from the Directors Guild of America and Broadcast Film Critics.

In 1995, Howard received his first Best Director of the Year award from the DGA for APPOLLO 13. The true-life drama also garnered nine Academy Award® nominations, winning two for Best Film Editing and Best Sound. It received Best Ensemble and Best Supporting Actor awards from the Screen Actors Guild. Many of Howard’s past films have also received Academy Award® nods including the popular hits BACKDRAFT, PARENTHOOD and COCOON, the last of which took home two Oscars®. Howard has served as executive producer as well on a number of award-winning films and television projects, such as the HBO mini-series FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON.

Howard’s diverse portfolio of projects covers all genres and includes some of the most popular and critically acclaimed films of the last twenty years. He followed the 1991 hit BACKDRAFT with the historical epic FAR AND AWAY, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. In 1996 he directed the suspense thriller RANSOM starring Mel Gibson and Rene Russo and in 2000 he delighted audiences worldwide with the blockbuster family hit DR. SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS starring Jim Carrey. He’s directed comedies like PARENTHOOD and NIGHT SHIFT and fantasy epics like WILLOW. Recently Howard directed
Oscar® winners Cate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones in the suspenseful western THE MISSING.

Howard and long-time producing partner, Brian Grazer, first collaborated on the hit comedies NIGHT SHIFT and SPLASH. The pair co-founded Imagine Entertainment in 1986 to create independently produced feature films. The company has since produced a variety of popular features including the hits THE NUTTY PROFESSOR, INVENTING THE ABBOTS and LIAR, LIAR.

Making his mark on the small screen, Howard executive produces the critically acclaimed Fox series’ ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and 24.

Howard made his directorial debut in 1978 with the comedy GRAND THEFT AUTO. He began his career, however, as an actor, first appearing in as “Opie” on the long-running television series THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW. During the 1970’s Howard starred in the popular series HAPPY DAYS and drew favorable reviews for his performances in AMERICAN GRAFFITI and THE SHOOTIST. As a child actor he also performed in THE JOURNEY and THE MUSIC MAN.

Upcoming projects include the highly anticipated THE DA VINCI CODE starring Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou (May 2006) and EAST OF EDEN, a remake of the 1955 Elia Kazan classic which is currently in development. 2006 will also see the release of CURIOUS GEORGE (February) starring Will Ferrell and Drew Barrymore, which Howard produced with Grazer.

AMERICAN CINEMA EDITORS (ACE) HONORS EDITING GREATS ED ABROMS, A.C.E. AND TERRY RAWLINGS WITH LIFETIME CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

 

ED ABROMS, A.C.E.

An Emmy® Award winning editor and director, Ed Abroms, A.C.E. entered the business through the mailroom of Republic Pictures but it wasn’t long before he found his feet firmly planted in editing and then directing. Over the course of his career, he’s been nominated for the Academy Award®, the ACE Eddie Award, the Cable ACE Award and the Emmy® for both editing and directing television series, television specials and feature films. His list of feature editing credits includes Steven Spielberg’s THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS, JEWEL OF THE NILE, THE OSTERMAN WEEKEND, STREET FIGHTER, YOU’LL LIKE MY MOTHER and BLUE THUNDER, for which he was nominated for an Oscar® for Best Editing in 1983. His television editing credits include over 30 made-for-television movies CRASH: THE MYSTERY OF FLIGHT 1501, ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, THE PATRICIA NEAL STORY, THAT CERTAIN SUMMER, ONE SPECIAL VICTORY, IMPATIENT HEAT and many of the COLUMBO television specials. He also edited the television series TARZAN.

As a director, Abroms worked on some of the most beloved television series of the 1960’s and 1970’s including HAWAII FIVE-O, POLICE STORY, KOJAK, THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, THE HARDY BOYS/NANCY DREW MYSTERIES, THE ROOKIES, CANNON and CHiPS, to name but a few. He also directed episodes of MURDER, SHE WROTE and KATE COLUMBO and edited episodes of ROD SERLING’S NIGHT GALLERY.

His work has been recognized by several voting organizations in addition to his Oscar® nomination for BLUE THUNDER including two Emmy® wins for editing COLUMBO and MY SWEET CHARLIE, a Cable ACE Award for editing FLORIDA STRAITS for HBO, an ACE Eddie nomination for editing THAT CERTAIN SUMMER and two Emmy® nominations for directing COLUMBO.

A member of ACE since 1973, Abroms actively volunteers his time to the organization as a longstanding Board Member and Treasurer and has produced the ACE Eddie Awards every year since 1985. He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Motion Picture Editors Guild, Directors Guild of America, Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers and the American Film Institute.

TERRY RAWLINGS, A.C.E.

Academy Award® nominated editor Terry Rawlings, A.C.E. got his start in the film industry in 1955 working in the advertising section of Rank Screen Services. After two years working in conjunction with the Rostrum Camera Department and the Art Department, he moved into the cutting rooms. His first feature job came in 1957 with TOWN ON TRIAL directed by John Guillermin as a 2nd Assistant Sound Editor. He worked for several years as a Sound, Music and Dubbing Editor from 1964 to 1977 including THE GREAT GATSBY, THE GAMBLER, SCORPIO, THE L-SHAPED ROOM, and TRIAL AND ERROR. It was 1977 when he received the opportunity to finish the editing of THE SENTINEL when the original editor, Bernard Gribble, had to leave and that was the start of an editing career that spanned 27 years and included editing 25 feature films including WATERSHIP DOWN, ALIEN, BLADE RUNNER, YENTL, GOLDENEYE, THE SAINT, ENTRAPMENT, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and CHARIOTS OF FIRE for which he was nominated for an Oscar® in 1982. Rawlings has also been nominated for the BAFTA Award five times for BLADE RUNNER, CHARIOTS OF FIRE and ALIEN in the editing category and for ISADORA and WOMEN IN LOVE for Best Soundtrack for his music and editing contributions.
