Speaker at UI March 3 to discuss
“Yuri” movement in Japan
URBANA—Erica Friedman, an independent scholar, will give a lecture entitled, “A flower of one’s own: Yuri Manga in Lesbian Japan,” on Friday, March 3, at 3 p.m., in Lucy Ellis Lounge, 1080 Foreign Languages Building, 707 S. Mathews Ave., Urbana, on the University of Illinois campus.
The talk, sponsored by the U. of I. Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC), is free and open to the public.
Friedman, founder of Yuricon, a celebration of lesbian images in Japanese animation and comics, will be discussing the term "Yuri", from its roots in Japanese literature, through its rebirth as part of the early Japanese lesbian movement to the present, as the label for an entire genre of media.
The lecture is part of the Department of EALC’s AsiaPacific Queer Workshop Speaker Series.
