Beckenbauer opens Frankenstadion in Nuremberg

by OC 2006 FIFA World Cup

"I'm very satisfied. It's a great day for us Bavarians," commented Franz Beckenbauer in Nuremberg on Sunday. The Organising Committee President was referring less to 1. FC Nürnberg's relegation six-pointer against Borussia Monchengladbach and more to the real purpose of his visit, the official opening ceremony for the renovated and modernised Frankenstadion which preceded Sunday's Bundesliga fixture.

Construction work took a year at a cost of €56.2 million. The stadium, boasting a capacity of 48,000 for domestic league fixtures, hosts three matches at the FIFA Confederations Cup in the summer, including Germany's clash with Argentina on 21 June. The new Frankenstadion is the venue for five games at the 2006 FIFA World Cup™.
