Back
in 1900, when MP&W was founded, the Muscatine Water
Works Company was providing our community with unsafe
water, straight from the Mississippi River. City Council
members and community leaders were unhappy with the
situation. In June 1900, the Muscatine City Council
agreed to buy the privately owned Muscatine Water Works
Company for $100,000. They dug a well and built a pumping
station, and by 1906, Muscatine residents were enjoying
fresh, safe water.
Today, MP&W's water utility serves over 9,200 households
and businesses and pumps an average of 10.8 billion gallons of water
per year. Muscatine residents and businesses use on average 26.0 million gallons of water per day. Our 27 wells
can produce 43.5 million gallons of water per day. We're
proud to report that our water surpasses all federal
and state water quality standards and that our average
monthly residential water bill is only $12.95.
